When I read online that the federal government banned the teaching of History in schools because it didn't want Igbos to read about the Nigerian Civil War, I believed it hook, line and sinker, even though I am a northerner.

I little bit of research would have made me realized the truth, but I was ignorant. I believed what other people said without finding out if they were right or wrong.

A school I was recently employed to teach Computer Studies wrote NECO exam, and the subject was History. I felt so stupid when I saw the question paper. If the government banned history, why is NECO, a government examination body allowing people to write History?

What I noticed over the years is that students don't like history because the subject is bulky. There are lots of dates and events to cram in history, and most students don't want to stress their brains.

I asked around today, and I realized that even though my school doesn't offer History as a subject, other schools do. Students from other schools that didn't have a NECO center, registered to write the exam in mine.

From the look of things, it is up to schools to decide if they want to offer history as a subject or not. This has got me thinking. What other lies have I been believing?

what about civic studies? The one that gives people a stronger moral sense. That can help reverse many religious indoctrinations?

WAEC examinations are done all across West Africa. That's why the body is called West African Examination Council.

Nigeria truely banned the study of History and their excuse was that it will now be part of government AND Civic Education .

A question you should ask yourself is: How many secondary schools are offering History before and After the year of the ban.

Not every west African country is so daft as to ban the study of History in their secondary schools.

Most Schools that offer it give you the option to choose between History and Government.

While I was in secondary school, most of my mates took Government, while a few others and I opted for History. We were only four; therefore, we had to take our classes at the History Teacher's office.

Thanks so much for the insight.
The Government has purposely distroyed the Curriculum.
The new subjects brought in the scheme of things like example the glorified Civic Education which to me is totally baseless and ought to be scrapped and other subjects like Marketing? Biology or Agric Science which shouldn't be paired. No Further Maths, no Technical Drawing. Commercial student are now worse. It's either Commerce or Accounting? Scrapped Government which is more detailed than the Civic Education.
The subject combinations are all a mess. I am still baffled by the difference between Computer science and Data Processing?
That's why History was left out because the confused pattern of the subject combinations.

There is still Further Maths and Technical Drawing in schools. However says contrary is lying.

I agree with you that civics is trash. What a Jss 1-3 student learns in the subject is the same as SS 3.
The handlers of our curriculum are confused.

You didn't know when the current Ministry of Education announced the restoration of History in schools following public outcry over the years but the curriculum is well diluted history without key historical events.
A History curriculum without substance, did you see anywhere in that thing how Alimi deceived Afonja who was garrison commander of the Alaafin, killed him and appointed himself as Emir of Ilorin or how Tiv Warriors ended the Jihad led by Uthman Dan Fodio in 1804?
Did they teach you how Gowon reneged on the Aburi Accord which partly led to the civil war or the counter coup of 1966?
Did they teach you how the Fulani jihadists came from Futa Jalon and took over Gobir (now called Sokoto) from the indigenous Hausa people under the guise of spreading Islam installing a Sultan who claims to be the head of Nigeria's Muslim population including Muslims in the South West?

Looool, where did you get these spurious claims about the Jihad? Who told you there was an invasion from futa jallon? I think you need to read the history books more and be less biased

History was removed from curriculum all over Nigeria and was recently reinstated by the National Assembly.

It shows you lack depth of events in Primary and secondary schools examinations.
Checks through the same neco several years back will confirm that history, as a subject, was banned (not for the reason you stated though).
For the fact that a child was born this January doesn't rubbish the fact that the same child wasn't existing last year. Does it?

Sorry for that!

The words the then minister of Education under Good luck gave was not a "BAN" but a "REPLACEMENT"!

My daughter was in JSS 3 at the time and so it affected her secondary school as History was DISCONTINUED from their school.
It was a POORLY thought out government policy (and some of us protested then).

The purpose?
Honestly, I don't know: but it was a terrible Government Policy.

It's like Lai Mohammed coming out to say "We did not ban Nigerians from using TWITTER"!

Nigeria, during the 2009/2010 academic session, removed the study of history from primary and secondary schools’ curriculum. Official reasons are given then were, among others, that students shun the subject; only a few jobs were available for history graduates, and that there is a dearth of history teachers. Lamentably, Nigeria today has no official account of the 1967 to 1970 civil war.

Seven years after, the government decided that the decision was wrong, and in 2017, the Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) announced it was set to reintroduce history as a subject, beginning from the 2018/2019 academic session.

The NERDC Executive Secretary, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, had stated that the curriculum would be standalone that would be taught from primary one to JSS III after the National Council on Education (NCE) had approved the reintroduction of the subject. In 2018, the Federal Government unveiled a new curriculum for the teaching and learning of the subject in basic schools across the country. The new curriculum was approved at the 63rd meeting of the NCE, which held in Kano in June 2017.

So you think this is enough reasons to scrape out history as a subject? No it isn't, something is definitely fishy, they want to gradually scrape it out with reasons best known to them...... they want to erase the truth.
