What's even the unit cost of the AH-1 cobra that the deal is worth over $800 million, please let's discuss it so we can find out the numerous stuffs wrong with this deal....
A unit of the APKWS is $22,000
The unit cost of the Hydra 70 rockets that goes with the APKWS is $2800

If they are buying 2000 APKWS and 10000 Hydra 70 rockets, that's just $100,000000

Where is the remaining $700,000000 going to?

Can you just hear yourself undecided
It's over 100% over necessary at this point . Before you pass your judgement we are not 100% sure if the attack helicopters where for the NA, we are just speculating.
People like you would criticize that they are not equipping the army, now that they are equipping them you're complaining. What kind of human being are you undecided
A human being who wants the attrition numbers reduce quickly! It's rare the NAF would be going for American helos, only the NA fits that category right now.

We also know there's been a big bone of contention between the NA and the NAF tussle for superiority over the battle field. My point is, we cannot put the cart before the horse, Let the Army provide it's priority equipments first before diving head first into aspects.

Invest in communication gears, MRAPs,. armoured divisions, special units and other basics.

Is it still in production?

MI-35M can also fire guided missile. Fvck that overpriced copter.
MI35M is slow, heavy, lumbering and cannot fight, return, fight again a d be ready the next day again to fight.

Only the US has done the reliability engineering work that guarantees that level of availability of helicopters . They learnt it the hard way in Vietnam.

Look at the profile of the AH1. Very thin profile and difficult to shoot down. The cockpit is just as armoured as MI 35M.

Choppers are the only priority equipment now. ISWAP are setting up ambushes every day.
To go the route you guys are thinking: MRAPS, IFVs, et. c, the NA needs 200,000 men in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa alone and the war will take 10 more years.

AH1 production lines never closed on the systems side.
There are hundreds of used, mothballed AH1s airframes in pristine condition. Just engines, avionics, systems and you have something cheaper, more reliable and effective than MI35Ms

Turkish Army still using SuperCobras

Was at close BVR range by AMRAAM

Anyways if one wants to go for a guaranteed kill generally he goes for the merge ( eyeball it ) using WVRAAM (preferably) provided combat conditions allow it

The deal would be structured like Super Tucano my friend. It is hardware + systems + infrastructure for ops and maintenance.
The NA has no Cobra pilots yet and new mechanics.

You guys have come with desktop calculators.

In case you don't realize it, at least 50% of forests in Nigeria are now teeming witl bandits and militants. Unless you are going to put 500,000 people in uniform to go kill them, it is going to have to be ISR, mobilize, take off, kill, return to base for the next few years.

What is the unit cost of the plane?
The engine?
The other systems too, unless there are other components to the deal, it won't add up.
And the most important thing is that is that the next thing for the army? $800 million on 12 helos+ spares? Having in mind the poor maintenance culture of the army.

Yes we need more helicopters but it will amount to nothing if we don't have strong presence on the ground. The bastards will just disperse each time there is a air attack and come back together again, and within a short period they will find ways to avoid such.

NATO with all its air components didn't liberate half of Afghanistan from talibans, the Syrian and Russian alliance had very strong ground components to move in for clearance after each air strikes.

I am not against the army going for helos but this deal is way too expensive and out of priority for the Nigerian army.
If it were to be the airforce, that would be another thing entirely.

And how do you know we are not getting more MRAPs/IFV)AFV, untill today nobody knew the government was buying attack helicopters from the US. Thank God it was blocked and we got the wind of the news.
The fact is that any modern Army needs it's dedicated aviation arm with at least dedicated attack platforms and that's one secrete of developed militaries.
I don't know where you got you intel about NA and NAF tussle for superiority on the battlefield. Hence I don't know about that, anyways buying the attack helicopters is not putting the Carr before the horse. The only problem me i see is always buying from uncle Sam when there are better alternatives from countries that are ready to sell without delay.

Thank God that most of these big purchase is done by the federal government and not the army/ military. I know most of us would have been saying the prices where inflated.
I don't know the cost of those engine but 28 engines is much and I like such deals.
Please you guys should do some little research and sometimes what you see on Google will not be what you'll get if you're going for the real deal !

What is the next thing for the Army?. They asked for Army Aviation and Nigeria has said yes.
They have already trainined pilots in basic stuff. Some already in India.
Every modern country has an Army with Aviation arm. The Nigerian Navy has pilots.
Why are you making a detour to where we have passed. The GOCs want choppers that can enable them control battle space without depending on a force that can be so depleted that a lone pilot was flying Alpha Jet just days ago and got shot down
Do you know how much NAF spent on MRAPs, tavors, machine guns and secure ground comms? The Nigerian Airforce even have their own SFs.

The United Kingdom Parliament has said Nigerians under President Muhammadu Buhari administration are at the mercy of non-state actors who unleash attacks on individuals and communities at will.

Members of the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the parliament; Caroline Cox, Rowan Williams, David Alton, Mervyn Thomas and Ayo Adedoyin; expressed their fears in a protest letter to the UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab.

The parliamentarians cited a recent event where bandits shot down a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet, as they expressed worry that the country was now under the control of non-state actors unleashing terror at will, particularly in the North-East and North-West.

“An intense gunfire from bandits caused an aircraft returning to base from a mission on the Zamfara-Kaduna border to crash.

“We fear that Nigerian citizens are now at the mercy of non-state actors who have been allowed to evolve and now have the capacity to shoot down a fighter jet, as has recently occurred in Kaduna.

“These non-state actors are currently unleashing terror at will, particularly in the North-East and North-West,” the letter said.

Meanwhile, Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State had raised an alarm over the displacement of many residents by the insurgents around Munya and Shiroro, adding that the terrorists hoisted their flag in Kauri.

Also, there have been several media reports of bandits’ attacks on soldiers particularly in the Northern region.

Agreed, but wouldn't an aircraft like the MI-17 be more appropriate for the army, it has the attack component and also ability to deploy troops for clearance operations?

Would you advise an army like the NA to go for something like this.

RiceProducers:
I beg your pardon. The AH1 is still in service. The reliability is 4x that of MI 35M.
I still wonder why people don't get updated about things. The version Nigeria is planing to buy would be a able to fire APKWS enabled rockets and ATGMs, dies that sound like old tech.

How could anyone say AH1s are old?. Of course they were active during the Vietnam War. Of course there are modern versions flying in Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco et. C.
The most serially modernized and upgraded combat helicopters in history. AH64 Apache is a slight departure from AH1 not the modern version of AH1.
The Jonathan administration actually attempted to buy these choppers in 2013.

As for Congress blocking it, Nigeria is actually just playing a good game.
The Plan B would be MI28N (which I don't like) or more of the MI35M
When the Americans come with sanctions, Nigeria wants to be able to use lobbyists to make the point "we came to you first" and you said NO.
The US may also be concerned (their capacity for silliness is high) about a future Nigerian civil War with their weapons falling in the hands of one side and the negative publicity.
you made a whole lot of sense...

12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters and accompanying defence systems to the Nigerian military

Could this helicopters be for the NA Aviation Wing ! Thank God they allowed the Super Tucanos to be dekivered, hopefully the remaining batch would be delivered in due time.
If the US is not selling why can't we go to China or Russia, why must it be the United States. Am fucking tired with all these there sanctions and blocking of military hardware procurement, even when you have your money. Let's buy else where cool
Thanks for sharing these !
USA has a childish way of threatening countries that buy weapons from others, especially Russia. They want to be the sole provider while treating buyers like trash. And in most cases, their value doesn't match the price they charge.

Thank God the deal was blocked. Why would the army be spending $800 million on helicopters when they have huge defect of tanks, artilleries, and other ground systems. Common protected troops carrying vehicles they don't have they are now going to buy 12 outdated AH-1 helicopters. I guess it's the APKWS that is carrying the bulk of the cost but it is still misplaced priority. The implication of this is that the army is basically trying to use almost all the cash they are getting from the supplementary budget to get the helicopters.
AH-1 is old for God's sake. They don't even know when they would be getting another allocation of this magnitude and they want to waste the opportunity to get hundreds of IFVs, tanks, artilleries and MRAPs. Fvcking morons sad

Lets put it this way when one is unaware of reasons / requirements / compulsions / considerations behind an acquisition its best to go with the end user / govt decision. They must have their reasons & their neck

Mi-17 is good for both transport cum attack but it is not a dedicated attack helicopter which i believe NA / govt wants to buy

US FMS deals are usually packaged deals which makes things easier for the end user at the end of the day

But US is also a bitch , making a deal with them is like making a deal with the devil , unless you got some kind of leverage on them , you are at their mercy more or less

Maybe CAATSA was factor in the choice, who knows , i am only speculating

Anyways i would suggest you to be realistic , if you have the paygrade and can change the decision then be game otherwise you just wasting your time by outraging isn't it ?
