Most of the time, when I try to connect or socialize with people, they end up trying to feed off you.

Networking has been a major issue among young persons especially now when most public speakers or leaders encourage it at events or social functions. The problem is, most young persons aren't actually going about it the right way. Networking is an opportunity to get to know the next individual, what he or she does, your shared interests etc

Most persons go into networking with a needy mindset, always asking without giving in return and this puts the other person off. This is one of the major reasons why most of the relationships they've tried to establish doesn't last.

Networking is a symbiotic relationship, always have something to bring to the table and you'd see the improvement you'd make.

One thing they never told us back in Uni was how to maximise networking well enough in our social circle for career advancement, Ahmadu Bello University amongst a few, seems to be only higher level institution in my opinion that has utilized career networking to the fullest , ensuring every ex student of theirs is pushed to the top of their careers. You see them everywhere from ex ministers to governors to directors in federal government parastalls. That is to say, there must be something aside academia that is being instilled in Ahmadu Bello University students that makes them strive for excellence outside the four walls of the university.

I would like to trim my focus of Gen-Z and Millennials as to how we can do better in this regard. I went to a good private school both for High school and University, and i can tell you for a fact that i only maintain decent relationship with a few of my ex classmates and this is partly because some silly reasons some still hold dear to their hearts, ego, malice to name a few. Even when i was in high school i never got along with all of my classmate even though i feel some of them behave obnoxious, silly and arrogant. University wasn't any different a lot of boys in my class never really mingled with any of our classmates even when i reach out to some of my friends and ask if they heard from any of our ex classmates, they say aside from me, they haven't heard from anyone else. I have also tried reaching to classmates i haven't heard from and the experience left a sour taste in my mouth because some of them feel you are practically doing too much. While this are situations that i have experienced, this is not far fetched from what a lot of my friends in my circle have experienced too.

One important lesson i learnt from networking with people is that it can plug you into a plethora of opportunities you may never have taught of. I made my first million supplying Agro allied by reaching out to someone who kept telling me "NO" more than 3 times and when i wen to him the fourth, he taught to the A to Z of the trade. A friend of my dad who worked in cooperate finance as a mid level staff got to work with people installing mast in eastern Nigeria by just reaching out to a friend back in high school, today as i speak, he got built his mansion under 3 months which was worth about N70m. I

Opportunities abound around us dear young people, but if we can put ego aside and be willing to work as part of something that brings value, regardless of whether we get credit for it or not. One other lesson young should also try and imbibe is that we may at certain point in our lives drop the "Solo" mentality of me doing it by myself and no help needed and be willing to join forces to bring a business or idea to life. Financing a business these days is tough work, and we should be willing to join our resources with others to bring a business into life. A lot of young people also need to create the "atmosphere to be accessible", the wrong attitude can fend people off of your because they may find your attitude too toxic for them.
hello Yanshy. I belif young people can net work better in nigt club. When there are plenty women, cheap booooze, nice jams, maybe some stripper, it help to coool the tempreature so that people are single and ready to mingle sir!! (real talk) angry
Ease into social circles with a good icebreaker

It is extremely intimidating to be alone at an event where everyone is talking in little circles.
We have a go-to strategy that, we’ll admit, isn’t for the faint of heart:
We will walk up to a group of nice-seeming people and with a big smile say, “May we crash your circle?” It has worked for us every single time because, honestly, who’s going to say “no"? Usually someone, or multiple people, say “Of course!” and then introduce themselves or fill us in on what they’re talking about.

If that’s a little too bold for you, you can also make eye contact with one member of the circle and start with, “Hi, our names are MANNA or dem MANNA” It’s a great idea to have some icebreaker questions prepared to get the conversation flowing. Two of our favorites are, “What brings you to this event?” and, “Do you know anyone here?”

And also, It’s all in the follow up
This is very important also.
We generally advise making one or two real connections instead of racing around a room, shoving business cards in people’s faces.
For us, a quality conversation always beats quantity, and it sets you up to keep the dialogue going after the event.
That’s why the real secret to effective networking is in the follow up.

If you spoke about a certain topic or person that you know, ask for their email address so you can follow up with a relevant article or an introduction.
And then do it.
Maybe something will come of it, or maybe nothing will, but hopefully you’ll have some interesting conversations along the way.

This works all the time.
Simply try it out young Nigerians..
All the very best y'all.
Y'all have a bright and beautiful future ahead of you.

Peace out as you progress in life.✌
they said you do roast vulture is it true?

I agree with your point, if na connection towards getting jobs I don't know for that one oh. Because most people with good connection before the job show self na problem, but las las e go still show.

But when it comes to skills, bros most people are not willing to learn, well me inclusive. The skill I picked was even subconsciously, didn't know that it would serve me one day just saw it as a means to get some fast cash in my pocket then, but presently that's what is feeding, clothing and housing me.

My guys go show dey ginger, bros show us way naw, you go explain tired and none go get mind to even invest anything (time or resources) into it.

We are all important towards eachother success but presently my best motivation is just to take my time and do what I want and invest it on myself towards getting more skills and more knowledge.

Self interest sounds selfish but it is better than self sacrifice, when you go for what you want and you succeed you can easily help more people compare to scarifying yourself to please people.

As my guy jay z would say, I can't help the poor if I am one of them so I got rich and gave back, to me that's a win win.
In the spirit of networking. What's that skill that you subconsciously learnt. I would not feel bad but it will be cool if you divulg.

Anyway, would have love to network but folks from way back (inner circle from high school) be feeling funky once you let them in about a budding idea, some will just ignore you altogether. So I took the long route because the short cuts to success is fraught with dangers.

I never reach where I dey go but I get destination..
What's that long route?

God is the ultimate connection. He will link you to People (known and unknown).

Some friends no be am o. A quote says "Brotherhood or Siblings don't mean you'll receive mercy from them but it is the person God sends to someone that will do the good and bless them"

Another notable quote is that "Nobody really wants you to be better than them besides your parents"

Networking can never be overestimated but do it the right way.

Put these quotes in mind, maintain a good relationship with God, have an open mind, do not intentionally sever all links to people because na person God go use help you too.
It's your last statement for me. You see God eh! Too too good.

"But if we can put ego aside and be willing to work as part of something that brings value, regardless of whether we get credit for it or not" Starting from my kindergarten KG/preschool, primary school, secondary and my University. I have a WhatsApp group for each, although when friends added me to the WhatsApp group, I was like what will I get/gain here, i was like abegi no be all those guys wey dey carry body as if say Dem no dey shit. On another hand, I immediately realize that there is something to learn from every single soul.
Today by his grace the reunion is stronger than anything most importantly I was very happy to hear from my old friends. Whether good or bad I love them but I know my boundaries. Op most of us don't know how to keep this circle call friends.
Certainly, I will wrong you or you wrong me but we should over look those things and move on.

We need quality person's in our lives not just people. Someone you can always bank on to have a discussion with. A versatile person. Committed, focus minded person who knows her onion. Though i know those aforementioned qualities are hardly come by. Particularly, the breeds of youths we have today. Although, I'm working towards being an Ambivert. But it's not feasible without having friends to talk to, without going out for any social gathering or what have you

Honestly speaking it's not being easy on my own side not having any. You know life at times isn't fair
