IT is the future oil. I recently obtained a scrum master certification from scrum alliance.org. Although, I'm still in the job search, I am planning to partake in manual QA training.

Although, it costs $2,999, I don't have the cash yet but I hope to get certified before the end of this year. It really pays to be in IT. It's more profitable than making hair, ICAN, ACCA or what have you. If you can, please invest rigorously into it.

I envy Data Analytics but I have a poor statistical skill. I don't want to start something I know I will perform poorly in it. This is why I choose Scrum and Manual QA because it's for talkers like me.

So, choose any field of IT that conforms to your interest or skill and you will never regret it. I often tell younger people who are involved in wire fraud to instead learn a skill with the equipment at their disposal. It's better than being chased around by EFCC, interpol, FBI etc

This is going to be a really long one.

I'm a 21 year old penultimate student of one of Nigeria's federal universities.

I'm one of those, I can never work under a boss. I'd rather have my own business people. However, this choice took a different turn the relationship I thought was going to lead me through the isle ended in the mud. I eventually figured out that my decision to own my own business and not get a job were influenced by three things:

1. My life was wrapped around the guy I was in a relationship with. I didn't really have a life of my own. My ambition when I was with him was mostly to start a business, finish my first degree, and be a sit-at-home mum and wife. I kicked against getting a second degree and even rejected two sponsorships to relocate to Canada because I wanted to be with my man (my mumu no get part two that time).

2. I saw how badly my mom was treated at her place of work by her boss(es). I'd usually get angry and eventually vowed never to get a job.

3. I considered myself someone who's not brilliant and smart enough for the cooperate world. (Low self-esteem).

The nonsense relationship ended in a terrible way but I eventually picked up myself and moved on. Now, I'm beginning to love the cooperate world but choosing a career path has become a headache. I've been totally confused. Some of my classmates are taking ICAN and ACCA. Some are also taking CFA courses (I'm studying economics) but I have no interest in CFA, ICAN or ACCA.

I spoke with a friend of mine and he advised me to consider data analysis but I have my doubts and fears. So many questions have been ringing in my head.

How do I choose a career path that I don't eventually get frustrated with at the end of the day?

How promising is Data analysis as a career path?

What's the average pay in this field.

I'd really love to thread a path where I have even the slightest spark of passion but I can't seem to connect my passion with data analysis.

Is passion important in choosing a career path?

It feels like I've been wasting my life all these years on a man so much that the only passions I have are:

1. Writing (I earned a few naira notes during the lockdown from this)
2. Hair styling (I fantasize about this and even beg people to let me make their hair)
3. Selling (I really love to sell)

What else? Nothing.

If I'm going to be sincere and truthful to myself, those three things are the only things that truly make sense to me when it comes to earning but I feel I should do more and spend some time in the cooperate world.

Wait, tell me y'all understand what I wrote up there because my mind is all over the place right now and I don't know what to think anymore.

At 21 you should be thinking about your career and making plans towards your future so you appear to be on the right path. Though I know there's more to you than can be written in those few paragraphs up there, I got the feeling you're still undecided and impressionable, and though you've made poor sentimental decisions prior to now, it's not too late yet.

So if you've identified your passions for writing, hair styling and selling what are you doing thinking about data analytics?

I advise people like you who see themselves as entrepreneurs and business oriented; that experience in the corporate environment is necessary to equip you with the hard and soft skills you will need when you eventually decide to venture out on your own, so on that basis will recommend that you get a job in a structured work environment to start with. If you're looking at data science, are you comfortable with statistics, technical & logical thinking, computer applications (math & stat, programming, databases and presentation) and IT in general? Do you want to learn and grow in those fields? If yes, then that's great but if no, what other field do you fancy? You need to find that out.

Final advice: Focus on those areas of strength already identified (writing etc.) and continue to develop the required skills and experience for making a living from them now and in the future, while also planning for and plotting a career path in the corporate world, data science or not. That way, even when you get employed you'll always have something to do "on the side" which helps you build a personal focus outside of your employment. Such a plan stands to make you gain valuable corporate discipline & experience, expand your knowledge base and polish your CV until you feel prepared (mentally & financially) and confident enough to start something of your own. Finally, give yourself realistic timelines to achieve these things so you don't heap too much pressure on yourself.

Also, If you have a passion for Writing and Selling and are truly gifted in the craft, you should give copywriting a try, it pays even more than Medicine and Law combined

Any career you can find offers on freelancer or upworks is promising. That's the future. Working remotely for people you don't meet and getting paid in dollars.

All those jobs people once thought lowly of like learning languages are hot cakes on upwork.com

If you know French or Hausa, you can interpret for people for a fee. You can do voice over script for short video adverts and get foreign exchange.

If you sabi electrical, then learn Proteus for simulation and building PCBs.

If you buy data, then do YouTube trainings on graphic design, video animation WordPress and some soft easy skills.

The employment scenery has changed. You can go rent a store now and call it your office and be doing freelancing jobs and still be richer than a Nigerian doctor that is not paid.

You can be an app developer that didn't go beyond secondary school and still wear better shoes than uniben computer science HOD

This is the era of skills and abilities and not class of degrees and connection. Your skill is your own connection.

So yes please... Your data science is a very good freelancing opportunity. Grab it

Python is taking a center position in almost all facets of most industries. You find python as an advantage in data science, GIS, microcontrollers (raspberry) and many more.
JavaScript is a very good language that will give you an edge in understanding any other programming you ever delve into. If you know JavaScript, then something like arduino c will be like childsplay to you.

If you are still young and receiving money from parents, you should learn the two. And most importantly, learn where to apply them. For instance if you know python, just learn some skills on qgis or arcgis, or take anything python is actually used for in the real world.

After that where should you go? Freelancer.com, upwork.com

Try to be self employed. Nigeria employment scene is turning something else. If you pay 2m now you won't get firs job unlike before. Someone got ndic job for 4.5m.

Better to do things that make you struggle on your own than wait till Nigeria will be good again. Or till population of lagosians reduce. The population is not going to reduce very soon.

Let me drop this gist here. I am currently working as a Data Analyst. I started in 2019 and i have moved across 4 jobs with the one i am in now as the 4th one. Data Analytics pays a lot if you so good. Learn Python(Preferably) or R, then PowerBI or Tableau or Google Data Studio. Also Excel knowledge and SQL knowledge will help you a lot. If you can use 6 months actively working on learning and practicing Data, you will be so good.
Lastly, understand business knowledge too and how it works with data. Data analytics is useless without Domain knowledge.
I also should tell you that you become better at Data Analysis by analyzing data not by watching videos on analyzing Data itself.
What develops your muscles is actually wrangling data, exploratory analysis, thinking analytically and getting insights from data. So while you watch videos, also practice daily.
It is a promising career with many companies looking for sound Data Analytics professionals.

Printed circuit board. Proteus has the Isis schematic display and PCB profile. The PCB allows people to generate Gerber files to send for production in mass.

If you want to know more about PCB, go to YouTube and search for a British lecturer called Scott Card. Hr has a whole course on Proteus which includes PCB. Learn it and start making money.

The picture below is a circuit done on perf board. You cannot do manynof this circuit before it will be copied or you even get tired. To make it appear like the green printed oyibo boards you usually see in your electronics, you need to build the PCB version of it, send the files to China for production

I can't tell you if you should choose this career path or not. But fhere things I can tell you about it.

I studied Agricultural Economics. And I am currently working as a data analyst. Unlike you, I came to the party late as I finished my schooling almost at 30.

When I was using my certificate to work, the highest offer I got was 70k. Now I am working with skills I thought myself and I am earnng more than twice that amount.

Data analysis is an infant field in Nigeria and there are opportunities globally. Notwithstanding, that doesn't mean there are no competitions. The major ingredient to landing a good DA job is experience. Hence, if you want to start, start now. Work for free if you must. Two years experience in the field will make sure you are not STRUGGLING to get an offer. 3-4 years will enable you to change jobs when you like (pls like everything, it's not a bed of roses).

Another ingredient for a successful career in this industry is intelligence. You need to have analytical mindset. DA is about problem solving. You need to learn how to ask the right questions and derive solutions. You can submit all the applications in the world in this field without a single response. Until your cover letter carries some works you have done and solutions you have brought to organisations. Hence, the place of HARD experience. You must love statistics and probability. While the ones you have learnt in school will take you 60% along (that's if you are not la cram la pour)), you must constantly learn trending mathematical concepts, DA methodologies etc)

In addition, skill set. If you have knack for knowledge, you will discover that the more you Know, the more you need to know. Over 60% of DA in Nigeria are actually Excel analyst. While in most industries Excel can do 100% of the work, you must keep working on your skill set.

Start with Excel. Learn it upto VBA level (though you will not need VBA 98% of the time). Pick Python Programming, SQL (MySQL or MSSQL), PowerBi or Tableaux. With these, you are good to go.

I am almost certain that with time, you wil pick interest in Machine learning, web developmen etc.

Where to start from? YouTube. It has 80% of the materials you will need. You can also try W3Schools, SoloLearn. For paid courses and certification (which I have not done), try Coursera. Note, what you need is skills not pali. Forget d yeye concepts of having pali.

I can take you Python for DA and all its libraries-not free not cheap.

PS: if you can't do presentation or talk before people, you may need to think twice before going into DA.
