Maybe. But it is easier to own a business and/or freelance for clients even in your locality with web development than data analysis.

Working in data analysis is more like a pyramid scheme work system: Big data analysis firm with connections gets the jobs from big firms then mostly outsource it to freelancers or those in their employ.

Most times, as a data analyst, you can't really point to any project you did as yours which means you can't build a legacy portfolio. With web development, it's possible.

And data analysis has a steeper learning curve. You'd need to learn and commercialise other digital skills before you break even with data analysis.

And, many web developers are increasingly adding SEO analysis, intermediate-level cybersecurity and copywriting to their skill sets. These extra skills make you more sort after as a web developer.

I sincerely hope this hits frontpage as I need as many sensible responses as possible.

This is going to be a really long one.

I'm a 21 year old penultimate student of one of Nigeria's federal universities.

I'm one of those, I can never work under a boss. I'd rather have my own business people. However, this choice took a different turn the relationship I thought was going to lead me through the isle ended in the mud. I eventually figured out that my decision to own my own business and not get a job were influenced by three things:

1. My life was wrapped around the guy I was in a relationship with. I didn't really have a life of my own. My ambition when I was with him was mostly to start a business, finish my first degree, and be a sit-at-home mum and wife. I kicked against getting a second degree and even rejected two sponsorships to relocate to Canada because I wanted to be with my man (my mumu no get part two that time).

2. I saw how badly my mom was treated at her place of work by her boss(es). I'd usually get angry and eventually vowed never to get a job.

3. I considered myself someone who's not brilliant and smart enough for the cooperate world. (Low self-esteem).

The nonsense relationship ended in a terrible way but I eventually picked up myself and moved on. Now, I'm beginning to love the cooperate world but choosing a career path has become a headache. I've been totally confused. Some of my classmates are taking ICAN and ACCA. Some are also taking CFA courses (I'm studying economics) but I have no interest in CFA, ICAN or ACCA.

I spoke with a friend of mine and he advised me to consider data analysis but I have my doubts and fears. So many questions have been ringing in my head.

How do I choose a career path that I don't eventually get frustrated with at the end of the day?

How promising is Data analysis as a career path?

What's the average pay in this field.

I'd really love to thread a path where I have even the slightest spark of passion but I can't seem to connect my passion with data analysis.

Is passion important in choosing a career path?

It feels like I've been wasting my life all these years on a man so much that the only passions I have are:

1. Writing (I earned a few naira notes during the lockdown from this)
2. Hair styling (I fantasize about this and even beg people to let me make their hair)
3. Selling (I really love to sell)

What else? Nothing.

If I'm going to be sincere and truthful to myself, those three things are the only things that truly make sense to me when it comes to earning but I feel I should do more and spend some time in the cooperate world.

Wait, tell me y'all understand what I wrote up there because my mind is all over the place right now and I don't know what to think anymore.

Thank you in advance.

Areas to focus on when considering a job or business.

1.Ur passion
2. Ur course of study and background
3. What’s lucrative out there inline with ur abilities even if not ur passion. Passion comes with knowledge sometimes.

4. Research ur interest, Many options can spring out from 1/2/3 if u do proper research.

Do not structure ur life goals around a person on lover. Do what u really like them make it work around ur relationship if necessary. It’s safer that way.

Nothing wrong with working for urself bt I always say u still need experience and experience comes faster from working for others sometimes even if for awhile.

WEB DEVELOPMENT IS OVERSATURATED

Is it? I'm into web development among other digitech skills. I run my own digitech startup too which has been confirmed by a number of persons on Nairaland I have interacted with off-Nairaland. Everything I stated are things I already practice, not speculations. My portfolio and website can be easily searched to see a few of the web and digital tech projects I have handled this year alone.
The OP stated she wants to go the entrepreneurial way and web development (and digital marketing) seem more likely to get you there than data analysis. This much is true for those who are really into digital tech.

Quick question: Are you a data analyst? If so, what have you done with it? I'd like to see your portfolio.

We know keyboard pundits and analysts like you who create a thousand how-to threads on Twitter and Quora but when we look closely, they don't have a portfolio or can't execute any job you outsource to them.

Answer the questions. Not answering is an answer in itself. smiley

I like girls like you. Unlike this generation of 'everybody wants to become an internet citizen.'

I'm still a student in 200 level, Sociology department. And recently a workshop was held in the department on data analysis. The lecturer taking the course is very skilled and experienced, he has worked with international companies.

Data analysis is an hot cake in Nigeria especially for social scientist, you should make effort in learning if you're truly interested.

There are lot of companies now waking up to keeping data. And there is no harm in trying a new thing tongue

You halfwitted orangutan! In digital tech, talk is cheap. Your portfolio or it's all bullocks. You nitwits and keyboard pseudo-tech pundits make noise without substance.

Are you a data analyst? If so, do you have a portfolio? Answer the damn question!

Over saturated only to those developer-wannabe that spends just 4 months learning html, css and javascript and believes he is now a guru grin web development is far from being saturated, go to linkedin and see thousands of web development jobs that have low number of applicants. I can't tell you if you should choose this career path or not. But fhere things I can tell you about it.

I studied Agricultural Economics. And I am currently working as a data analyst. Unlike you, I came to the party late as I finished my schooling almost at 30.

When I was using my certificate to work, the highest offer I got was 70k. Now I am working with skills I thought myself and I am earnng more than twice that amount.

Data analysis is an infant field in Nigeria and there are opportunities globally. Notwithstanding, that doesn't mean there are no competitions. The major ingredient to landing a good DA job is experience. Hence, if you want to start, start now. Work for free if you must. Two years experience in the field will make sure you are not STRUGGLING to get an offer. 3-4 years will enable you to change jobs when you like (pls like everything, it's not a bed of roses).

Another ingredient for a successful career in this industry is intelligence. You need to have analytical mindset. DA is about problem solving. You need to learn how to ask the right questions and derive solutions. You can submit all the applications in the world in this field without a single response. Until your cover letter carries some works you have done and solutions you have brought to organisations. Hence, the place of HARD experience. You must love statistics and probability. While the ones you have learnt in school will take you 60% along (that's if you are not la cram la pour)), you must constantly learn trending mathematical concepts, DA methodologies etc)

In addition, skill set. If you have knack for knowledge, you will discover that the more you Know, the more you need to know. Over 60% of DA in Nigeria are actually Excel analyst. While in most industries Excel can do 100% of the work, you must keep working on your skill set.

Start with Excel. Learn it upto VBA level (though you will not need VBA 98% of the time). Pick Python Programming, SQL (MySQL or MSSQL), PowerBi or Tableaux. With these, you are good to go.

I am almost certain that with time, you wil pick interest in Machine learning, web developmen etc.

Where to start from? YouTube. It has 80% of the materials you will need. You can also try W3Schools, SoloLearn. For paid courses and certification (which I have not done), try Coursera. Note, what you need is skills not pali. Forget d yeye concepts of having pali.

I can take you Python for DA and all its libraries-not free not cheap.

PS: if you can't do presentation or talk before people, you may need to think twice before going into DA.
can a 28 year old still do this?

Tho I have been told that I can't bcus I don't have any background in data related stuffs ,But your comment inspired me.
I need advice

I started with Python Programming. And I started with my phone (SoloLearn).

BUT i will advise you to start with Excel and try to have a laptop.

If you love reading, you can download Excel Bible. If not, you can search for Edureka tutorial on YouTube. Download the files they use in the tutorials (you will find them in the links under the videos). Follow along RELIGIOUSLY. note your aim is to know. "Not to carry name for head"

I have been gathering my lectures since about 3 years now. You can start now. Work for free.

Data science/data analytics could be described as a gold mine. Everything around us generates tons of data in milliseconds. Businesses need these data to refined to understandable facts which will drive their decision making process. Equipping your self with this skill is only the right thing to do.
You can write, you can make hair, but I bet you that very soon, AI ND robots will takeover those stuffs. (There's already an AI that review law cases, thus stealthily eliminating the need for lawyer). While not learn how to operate these futuristic machines by leveraging data science. I want you to think long term. You migration dream could also be actualized by numbering data scientist/analytics I'm your skill set.
Apart from working for high pay, you could build your own startup. Think if it. You gather around you a team of like minds ND set out to achieve something great.
Am currently taking Google ND IBM data science/analytics certification courses. I already have some projects (a potential startup ) which I will build with my team.
