My father is yoruba from ibadan, my mum is Igbo from Ideato North in imo state. I've had an interest in politics from very young age, hopefully someday I'd venture into politics and I'd need a platform to start from, am drawn to the south east because my mother's ties with the region, but considering the political climate of nigeria and requirements for running for office would it be possible to claim my mother's side as state of origin? Need your advice.

Lalasticlala would be great if these gets to front page.

Hope you bear names indigenous to ideato area? Secure an indigene certificate from her local government and you are good to go.

GO with what is obtainable in Nigeria

Every state in Nigeria will ask for your root

Not peculiar to only Igbos

Why not contest in your fathers land?

Why change the topic of your post to Igbo?

Just for attention or for people to rant about Igbos again?

What is obtainable in Nigeria and what exactly defines state of origin....I have claims to the south east just as every Igbo boy with a Yoruba mother has claims to the south west. And my choice for contesting in my mother's home land is simply because of my interest in igbo land. Title may have been different but the content remains the same. What point are you driving at?

Op, the smart thing to do is change your name and fully assimilate with your mother's community, learn igbo, dress igbo and be Igbo but just don't forget were you're coming from and where your loyalties are. Yoruba's are known to be great administrators, rep us well. Best of luck.

Forget the bants on nairaland, this thread wasn't to bash igbos, I really have political aspirations and I simply have a deeper connection to my mum's side. I might contest in the near future once my finances are strong.

It means you are half n half, that is if each of your parents are pure blood. And NO you shouldn't be able to contest anywhere except in dumbland because your loyalty and interests are divided. We are indigenous people with language and culture. This is why even Bible don't support marrying outside your ethnic groups, you are given a nation and language to protect for a reason.

We Yoruba are the most guilty of marrying outside our nation and the result is horrifying to the point of destruction. There are people who have 50%, 25%, 12.5% & even 0% Yoruba blood in them but claiming to be Yoruba when they are not but have more of other Nigerian blood in them. This is something young Yoruba are talking about now and try putting a stop to, it's becoming a curse with most evil in Yoruband are done by the so called mixed blood. At this point it's a traitorous idea for any Yoruba to marry Igbos, Fulani or other Yoruba's nemesis. We need to speak more about it and shun such weddings like I told a friend, if we all do our part and condemn and refuse to recognize such marriage, it will repair Yorubaland, they have done too much damage to Yorubaland.

I understand how everybody wants to be Yoruba to the point that we now have fake Yoruba, thanks but no thanks, we can no longer accept anyone mix with other Nigerian blood as Yoruba because you are not. A Yoruba-Nigerian is one with pure Yoruba blood parents.

I understand your point and fears but they aren't valid. Firstly loyalty to one's tribe isn't determined by if such person is half Yoruba or married to a non yoruba what matters is simply one's awareness and loyalty to his tribe, the majority of sellouts today in Yoruba land are full Yoruba's and one of the major voices and pro regional politician is akeredolu married to an igbo woman, I am Yoruba and my loyalties are certainly not divided but it doesn't mean I shouldn't seek political position via my mother's homeland. And there's no harm if Yoruba men go out to fullfill God's word by planting their seeds in every corner of the world, I'd only frown at the practice if it's Yoruba women doing such, what's important is the growth of our culture and passing our cultural values down to our children, The Yoruba language and culture survived slavery and colonization, making it's way to even south America...this half Yoruba argument doesn't hold water.
