imolites sees flyovers as big development but me i don't see it in that way, there are a lot of things we can do to improve our cities. The way we develop our cities is quite different from other Africans look at countries like kenya, Mauritius, Lesotho Rwanda and South African cities u will see that we're backward as a country our government just allow people to be building nonsense the only thing our leaders are after is the control of state money no city development policies, our cities looks 17th centuries. Govt build and sell to the masses that's how it's done in well organized countries

What do you suggest, that can be done to improve the city of Owerri, that's practicable

I'm not a fan of comparing countries but this is a good example of a street done right

If you want to use this road you can
1. walk
2. take a bik
3. take rail
4. drive

This will

1. take pressure off the road from car use so that you don't need to rebuild it every year
2. help businesses in the area because people on foot and bike can visit more
3. give people lifestyle options. We are creating what many cities are regretting creating and that's a city for drivers. Every city in the US except NYC is regretting making this mistake and are trying to reverse it. We who have a blank slate are jumping into the mistake because elaborate road structures make it look like 'the governor is working'. They're monuments to ego.
5. Safer. Car oriented cities lead to speeding and vehicles are among the #1 causes of death in any poorly designed city. A multi purpose street is statistically safer.

There are also things in the picture above that should be noticed.
1. no sand. All available land is covered. in the US they use grass more and in europe they use brick, but this will eliminate dust, dust storms, air pollution, and all of the hazards that come with dust to people and electronics. There are many Nigerian cities that you will walk through, come home, and your cloths are dirty. Image what it's doing to your lungs. So hopefully they cover that open space with trees, but idk. No governor gets praised for trees. Just road road road. I wouldn't encourage grass in nigeria cause it takes a lot of maintenance and running water which we don't have much of

2. easier to clean and keep clean

we can never get ride of sandy and dusty roads any time soon in Nigeria because all our roads are not tared, owerri for instance some inner streets are not tared this is where all those heap of sands and dust are coming from. At times I don't blame our leaders much on infrastructure base on our budget. like America u talked about we can never be in same league with this people, last week American lawmakers approved 1.4 trillion dollars for reconstruction of some roads and changing of some water pipes, this is Nigeria's budget for the next 20 years or more than so tell me why u can't build world-class infrastructures with this kind of money even if u are corupt, u can't expect Nigeria to be like America with budget of 33 billion dollars for 220 million people, in side this money that's where Imo state government get their own infrastructural money

Yes, but it's not feasible because the source of the water is inconsistent

I, agree with you 100%, we will never be like America but our problems are we lack attention to detail and corruption, Counties like Rwanda, Namibia, and South Africa don't have two heads nor trillions of dollars.

last South African budget was up to 150 billion dollars, that's Why they are better than us in terms of infrastructures and building more smart cities with their little population of 57 million people, another country that's doing great things now is Egypt they are building smart cities but nothing is happening in Nigeria

If we can't reach that league we should stop trying all together. That's not true. We can reach and surpass and that is the mentality we need to succeed.

You can cover loose sand with stones, pavement, brinks, woodchips, grass etc. There are 1000s of alternatives if we're willing to be smart and empathetic towards our fellow human beings. If you wear a white shirt outside in a place like Lagos and now even Owerri and come back after 5 hrs it will be browner. Even if you touched nothing. That is evidence of what it's doing to our health.

So if we are convinced we will never be in the league where weren't not shoving dirt in our lungs and dying young or having asthma for no reason then we should just accept death and go sleep in the middle of heavy traffic. Money is not the issue. It's ignorance, bad priorities and laziness.

exactly bro. It's a matter of mentality. Nigerians have low standards for themselves and the things they have high standards about are stupid like clothes and showing off. The things they think are high standards like overpasses are also stupid.

Even if Nigeria budgeted $150 a year, it still wouldn’t show like it would in a country with a working and accountable political-economy....a country not saddled with bloated overhead costs and a corrupt civil/public service.....a country where the civil/public service isn’t staffed by a preponderance of people who haven’t got a clue and only attained their positions based on quota-system, nepotism and man-know-man!

if we want to achieve great City locals must stop selling lands to individuals, govt should be in charge of buildings or few real estate developers. they will build the houses tared the roads and pave the sidewalks with modern drainage system, let me tell you why we can't stop having bad roads in every corner of owerri and Nigeria is because our City development is done randomly, for instance when you go to Avu and obinze those area are already build up when there's no govt presents in those areas no streets no roads no city plans and same is happening in other parts of owerri very soon people in those areas will be crying bad roads. govt will be confused they won't know where to channel their development because of their scarce resources. In South Africa, Morocco Egypt and some other African countries u can not buy Land u can only buy building properties, new owerri was mapped out since till today many plots of lands are still empty while people are going to inside areas of the City and buying lands, had it been investors concetrated their investments in new owerri it would have being easy for govt to provide good environment for the people then the same govt will still map out another area at least this will help us

I get you now, but government should lead the way by developing massive estate with realitic mortgage rates, I bet you a lot of people wouldn't be going through the headache of building themselves.
It's still a shame that Owerri doesn't have a luxury modern styled estate like centenary estate in Enugu.

Be calming down. You see, we need smart, fearless and sincere people to run our country and see wonders. For several decades, Nigerian leaders have become totally useless - thanks to petrodollars. Year in, year out, we plan our budgets with the so-called crude oil benchmark, meaning that over 80% of our revenue comes from crude oil.

TBH, no serious country whose population is over 100 million depends on one revenue source. You must use money to chase money (we always say that in the east). However, Nigerian polticians have become weak in thinking that they forgot that the change we generate every year is supposed to cater for over 200 million people. Mind you, any country that doesn't invest in research will always be a consumer nation. In fact, I think the only thing Nigeria is getting right is corruption.

Way forward: We need a new crop of leaders - the type I mentioned in the first paragraph. If I should write all I have in my head, an entire page will not be enough. Nonetheless, we need people who can develop new sources of revenue - that way, we can encourage our people to pay tax. Much of what the US uses to finance her budget comes from income tax. However, we cannot do that here because people are too broke to pay taxes, most Nigerians have criminal inclinations (tax evasion), and the sincere ones don't even trust the government enough not to loot their taxes.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (ESIA) FOR THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIAL LIVESTOCK PROCESSING ZONE (SLPZ) AT OKIGWE LGA, IMO STATE

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Overview of the Project

The project involves the establishment of a livestock processing and diary production hub and an accompanying ranching facility in the south east zone. It will be designed to the highest animal welfare standards and will include the most recent technical advances such as meat/animal tracking systems, efficient cryovacing equipment, and will be designed and operated incorporating the most up-to-date food safety equipment and practices. The point we are making is that Owerri is a glorified village unbefitting as a state capital. You cloned my moniker to deceive people.

Any place chosen other then your backwater village should have been unbefitting as state capital.

Talk is cheap. I again what is the name of your backwater village which would have been chosen instead of Owerri. There was no urban area worthy of mention when Owerri was chosen as the state capital. If you have anything slightly better than Owerri, please I am all ears. By the way, I am from "NO STATE".

That frustrated old man isn't from Imo.
The same wretched Chino is still on Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi threads trolling.

He has Igala ancestry from Anambra.

You should ignore him like others.
