Nairaland Verification ❗ by RadioMOUTH(op): 1:52am On Sep 05, 2021

Nairalanders I've been thinking, it's a high time for KYC verification to be on Nairaland...

(Just in case you don't understand) - Where people on Nairaland have to verify their accounts with the identification cards, so we know who is who on Nairaland.....

This is the place we all get legitimate information...this is where people also get scammed...

Nairalanders, what are your thoughts??

Interesting.

You probably need a new system and not NL. Adding such a feature to a forum originally conceptualized to be anonymous wouldn't just be an "improvement" but a complete philosophical change. "Facelessness" is a grand part of what Nairaland is all about. It can even be argued that the faceless nature of the app is what has brought it this far. So what you're suggesting is an overhaul. Like I said, you're not improving the design, you're challenging the idea behind it. And when the idea behind the design of a system is challenged, the usual outcome is a new system and not overhauling the existing one.

It's easy for anyone who isn't part of the NL design team to suggest KYC verification because such a person naturally has a different line of thought. But instead of suggesting this shift to Seun, why not evaluate the impact of KYC verification (or the absence of it) and use that as your business justification in the literature of a new system or in your pitching? Such an evaluation would let you know if it's even worth it or not. In other words, I am suggesting you create an app that has this feature and let people decide if they want to join or not instead of suddenly adding it to system being used by millions of people who probably joined cause of the anonymous nature of the app.

Just an opinion. Good thinking on your part.

We did nt join bcus of d anonymous nature of the site, we join because of the content we enjoy
We are subjected to alot of risk which due to wat we enjoy abt the site we forgot abt the risk.
Try doin survey of those that experienced the bad side of this site, u will discover it need to be looked into.
The risk an individual will experience on this site is nt limited bt it according to each member risk evaluation( u fend for ur self here.)
So i think KYC verification should be introduced bt shud be based on choice (nt compulsory)
Then u as a good member , u re-evaluate the way u are subjected to risk nd the way u manage it.

U dnt expect me to trade with sm1 dat dsnt putin for the KYC verification. (Common sense)

I don't doubt you

The word anonymous makes me not support your opinion that's why the KYC is important

Facebook is blocking accounts today just because they don't want anonymous users anymore..

People would learn to respect people here knowing that they could be charged for using wrong words..

Everyone would use Nairaland as a means of trading knowing you're on the safe part...

Nice input.

But it would be better if you say "I" and not "we". The content you said made you join the app was created by those who might have joined simply cause the app offered them anonymity. A new app has no content and those who made the initial appealing contents might not have had the courage to do so if they had to identify themselves. Don't get me wrong, my post was not against KYC verification and its importance. I only posited that the absence of it is a grand part of the idea behind NL. It's like adding KYC verification to project titled "Faceless Online Forum". That would stick out. It's even worse now there are millions of users already enjoying the "facelessness".

The idea of making it a choice is good middle ground in my opinion.

Facebook never planned to be anonymous. It was never a key part of the app. NL has being anonymous at its core. Taking that away now would be a shift in ideology and not just technical improvement. Things could easily go south.

Like the guy above said, given users the option would be much better.
