Mugu...there are better ways of draining the dams without flooding out the residential area ...check for global best practices..fools your useless country makes Basic things seems impossible and a privilege...anyways your Buhari government has nothing on me ,na you the government dey affect and na you dey suffer the pains ..enjoy your shithole
Don't mind them. See how most of them are trying to sound perspicacious. You'll never hear that a dam was opened in Europe or America and then, it led to flooding. You only see flood when there is some sort of crazy rain, tornado and the rest. The dam is badly managed and that's the fact. You can't keep flooding residential areas annually because you claim that the dam would break. If that dam was opened earlier in the rainy season, we wouldn't be having this issue.

In 2019, this Oyan dam caused serious flood in parts of Lagos. In 2020, there was no flood at all. So tell me, the pattern of the rain suddenly changed? And now the rain suddenly started falling again? These guys are just wicked and don't care about the millions of people who are affected by this act. On the other hand, I heard that there are some companies who pay them not to release the water early so they could have the time to carry out their fishing business. And also, it's a way to get ecological funds from the government.

Please of what purpose is the release of the dam? And why not wait till dry season if they must do it?
If the water is not released in a controllable way, the dam would burst and you can imagine the consequence.
To avoid this, they release the water in the dam in a controllable manner - releasing small volumes on each occasion.

Can't the water be used for Large scale irrigation farming in the area rather than this perennial release.

A 5000 hectares will utilize the excess fully. Why are we so dumb
You have a wise suggestion but because you did not understand the terrain of the area makes you think farming land is possible in that area. However, your suggestion of irrigation is the key to sustainable agriculture and food security. We are totally dum in this country.

The Oyan River has been flowing along that course for centuries. A dam was built on the river in 1983. It is called the Oyan Dam. Villages that were on sites that could possibly be flooded by the construction of the dam were relocated (just as was done with Busa and New Busa).

We are currently experiencing the effects of climate change and one of the results is unusual weather patterns. There have been more intense rainfall in recent times and this has caused floods in places like Germany and has increased the intensity of hurricanes that hit the North American coast.

Due to unusually heavy rainfall, the pressure on the Oyan Dam was intense in 2009 and the flood gates had to be opened to release pressure on the dam. This led to floods in parts of Northern Lagos.

Now someone is saying that they should not have channelled the water through Lagos. Where would they have channelled it through, Congo??

This is the course that the water has always flowed, even before people built there!

Do you know the environmental impact of rechannelling that river?? Have you provided the place that the river will be channelled through??

The only solution is to relocate people that live in the affected areas, but you know the problems that will arise from that.

Release of dam periodically is a necessary action. May God help those affected.

Where are they going to store the water for irrigation in the dry season?.. remember we're in rainy season in Nigeria and irrigation is done during dry season. If the water is not released, the dam will collapse. Don't be dumb!

Oga, irrigation is still release. The flooding will still happen.

My problem is that the release has not been put to good economic use.

So many structures in our nation lie fallow while the people suffer.

Op what fvckery is this you posted

"He added that within the last week, the volume of water released had increased from 15,000 to 21,000 millilitres but reduced to 17,000 millilitres on Monday."

You had better confirmed you units properly...17,000 millilitres is just 17 litres oo....perhaps they meant million litres

do u need irrigation during rainy season or dry season ? For them to release d water it is because the dam is filled to the capacity it can hold and don't forget we re still expecting more rainfall in weeks to come. Failure to release it might destroy d dam
Don't mind the Ode..guy. This is a country where people just comment without proper knowledge or education of what they are talking about. What a country?

Except that the flood in Germany wasn't caused by a dam. It was caused by the unusual heavy rainfall. And the North America was caused by hurricane. Was there hurricane in any part of Nigeria? Let's say it as it is, the dam is badly managed.

Last year's rain pattern was worse, but guess what? There was no flood! This event is somehow calculated. There was flood in 2019, so they let everyone rest from the menace in 2020, and then make it happen again this year. The fact remains that the dam is badly managed for selfish reasons.
