Why Do Many Nigerians No Longer Use Bicycle As Means Of Transportation by Havesomesense(op): 5:49pm On Sep 15, 2021
Why do many Nigerians no longer use bicycle as means of transportation.

It's very rare to see an average Nigerian riding bicycle to work, school or church.

What happened?

Roads got too busy. Bicycles got rare in market. Most believe 'two wheels bad four wheels good' and want to be better than their neighbours.

It's become obsolete.

It's tiring too using it in Nigerian dilapidated roads. Just imagine being on a struggle with gear one climbing a hill and the chain divides.

Not every road is too bad for a bicycle.

I see some guys using it in my street.

With the way fuel is sky-rocketing, man may resort to buying one for the rainy days.

If you ride carefully and it is not your time to go 6ft below. You are good.

It still pains me till today that I don't know how to ride a bicycle. After the children bicycle my dad bought for us to ride around the house, I never rode one again until I turned 9, when we traveled to the village for summer break but the thing injured me badly that I still have the scar on my leg till today.

I can never forget that day.

Bicycles should be relevant with the way things are now.

But not in the south.

Everybody in the south wants a car or nothing.

That's gambling, you can't ride a bicycle one a crazy road that all sort of vehicles are spreading on

Assuming the bicycle have a separate lane like BRT then every average Nigerian will ride one excluding minors

This is one of the flaws of our society. The petrodollar made us to equate ourselves with the West overnight. Everything in our lifestyle was designed to look like them. Meanwhile we were not productive.

Asians and Eastern Europe maintained their conservative lifestyle. The roads were designed to accommodate bicycles and motorcycles. Today they are richer than us but there are still provisions for their old lifestyle.

While India and China had tricycle and bicycle aplenty inspite of their advancement, it was poverty that wiped our senses that made us to remember them. Our roads had no provision for them abinitio.

We need a rethink.
