The Taliban case is different. US was simply helping the Afghan Army in Afghanistan but the Afghan troops wanted Taliban. They were sabotaging US efforts. US decided to stop wasting money and lives on Afghanistan. They withdrew, they were not defeated. If US continued to stay there, Taliban wouldn't be able to size power.
