Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state on Friday said the Southern Governors Forum will vehemently confront any political party that fields a northerner as presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

The governor who disclosed this while featuring as guest on Channels Television programme ‘Politics Today’ monitored by DAILY INDEPENDENT, said the Southern governors from three major political parties of All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are unanimous in their resolution on zoning of the presidency and will follow it to the letter.

The Southern governors in their meeting in Lagos in July had said the presidency should be zoned to Southern Nigeria in 2023 when President Muhammadu Buhari completes his second term. They also reiterated it at their meeting in Enugu on Thursday.
 
According to Akeredolu, who is the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum “If we have anything that we have agreed, that we have unanimity, it is the issue of president in 2023. All of us, irrespective of our political party. There are three political parties that are in the Southern Governors Forum. We have APGA, PDP and APC and we all agreed on this”.
“ Any party that picks any candidate from the North will have to face all Southern governors, because they will not support. But it has to come from South. We are saying that there must be rotational, the justice and fairness in it, that is what we are pushing”.

“ If my president, Muhammadu Buhari has ruled for eight years, then it cannot be from the North again. The next president must come from the South. We have not gotten to the stage where we will say let us give it to somebody who is competent”.

“ There are many people that are competent. We have competent people in the North as we have competent people in the South. So, the president can come from any part of the country. But if you have occupied the position for eight years, then it has to rotate back to the South”.

“We can continue to do that until it gets to a point where the issue of zooming becomes an anathema. But for now, zooming is it and those of us from the South are determined that the next president comes from the South”.

North would have completed two terms which is 8 years by 2023.. common sense dictates that power should move South for another 8 years for equity sake except the North have evil agenda or something to hide.

Governors re the one sells presidential candidates to the locals in their state.
If a presidential candidate does not have backing of Governors he is doomed.
A presidential candidate cant not be live on ground in 36 states of the Federation to monitor election process..
It is the Governor of each state that is in control of the party structure.

Time will tell because it is being rumoured that Wike is planning to be the vp to Tambuwal. How that one will work, I do not know.

Akeredolu much as I admire you, please just speak for South West from now on.

Where were you when the Northerners threatened hell during GEJ? people like El-rufai and co. Agreed Yar'adua couldn't complete his tenure and GEJ had to step in. Why didn't Northerners see GEJ as a Nigerian that they did all they could to frustrate him?

Good question.. his wife is inclined towards Uzodinma in Imo state and the ways of her people.

Akeredolu should thread with caution cos South still needs vote of the North to produce the elected president.

As it stands now, South East are playing to the gallery with the likes of Umahi showing solidarity to Sokoto caliphate with the hope they'll make him president. We know their game plan to reap where they didn't sow but we'll just pretend they are also Southerners for the time being.
