It depend there are different types of machines and their functions Eve apost bed ,dubble presserfoot,a flat bird ,preferable the dubbl presserfoot is fine.

To avoid getting the wrong machine for him, why not just give him a call like you are checking up on him, from there, divert the conversation to challenges he's facing with his work, from there to machine talks, from there you guys can talk about the machine he currently needs. Leather works is very broad and several machines are involved in the work process, there's leather cutting machine, there's sole cutting machine. There are machines for sewing clothes, and there are machines for specifically sewing leather. Buy something that has WALKING FOOT. Protex, emel, two lion etc are good brands.
