Pros And Cons Of Installing A Turbocharger In Nigeria by Kelvin30286063(m): 12:06pm On Sep 26, 2021
So I'm considering installing a turbocharger in my TL 2012 (which sadly didn't come with an inbuilt turbocharger). I've seen lots of videos of the same car that has been turbocharged and even supercharged on YouTube and I always admire the amazing speed and the noise.
I have checked Amazon for a genuine turbocharger and I think I can afford it but I have some problems.
Who will install the turbocharger for me and secondly, what are the pros and cons of turbocharger on cars in Nigeria especially with our poor fuel products.
I'll like advice from someone that has done it before and the top mechanics here.
Thank you.

Once you install a turbo charger, forget fuel efficiency... It's best if you live in areas with good roads.

Hope it's not your daily driver that you want to install turbo charger in?

Such fun projects make sense when you live in a place with good roads and you have other cars.

The project car will only be driven once on Saturday evenings. Etc.

I don't think turbocharger has much to do with road since it doesn't take control of how you accelerate your car from you. You have a point with having it on a weekend car though. Thank you. I'll consider that.

Op what engine is in yours? A 3.5 or 3.7? What current mods have you got under your hood?

its a nice project idea but to do it properly you’d will also need a manual gearbox from another car that will bolt on to your current engine and a new computer chip to assist the brain box utilize it’s new supercharged power output to your wheels.

Automatic cars and aftermarket supercharger mods don’t play nice most of the time.

I'm considering a turbocharger not a supercharger. There is no mods apart from a new intake.

What you would need:

Preparation:
Detailed knowlege of current out put(HP and Torque) at defined RPMs (info obtained from Dyno)

Items:
2. Matchable turbocharger and associated kit( after target HP and Torque have been agreed upon)
3. Waste-gate
4. Inter-cooler
5. Associated plumbing kit(Manifold to inter-cooler and then to radiator)
6. New exhaust manifold system to be fabricated to fit selected turbocharger
7. New intake manifold system to be fabricated to fit inlet side of Turbocharger
8. Upgraded Pistons and Connecting rods( in order to handle high boost pressures). This means an engine teardown
8a. Upgraded crankshaft (may not be required)
9. Redesigned camshaft profiles (may be taken care of by proper engine mapping since engine is VVT)
10. Wiring harness
11. Engine (ECU) mapping service
12.Transmission internals upgrade and TCU mapping (transmission will be torn-down and internals upgraded to handle the increased HP and Torque)
13. Upgraded radiator/engine cooling system
14.Possible structural modification/fabrication to allow new parts.
15. Experienced personnel/ Engineers to handle the job

And some i may have forgotten to mention

This may set you back 30-50K USD (more than 4 times the amount for your car if you are considering value)

Okay. if it’s a turbo you’d still need to get a computer to remap your transmission shift points to match with the new revolution count of your turbocharged engine.

If you install a turbo without the computer tuning the car will run but not smoothly because your gear will be confused on when to up shift and down shift.

Wonderful post but Why did you list it all out like this at once? If op gets discouraged now it means you’ve gone and thrown spanner into all the promising things we could have seen on this thread.

Same thing some guys did with the guy who has been trying to paint his car by himself.

Op no fear. You got this. All you really need is money, google, patience, brain and another car to use while the project is ongoing. What the above poster said is true. You’d need everything on that list done if you really want to do it right.

Wow that's very true and thanks for this. The big question is, where will I get such technician. I know a few key programmers but I'm not sure they have the technical knowledge to do that.
Pls do you know anyone?

grin

I was only trying to help smiley

It can be done. It is only the technical expertise required that may be a bummer

Maybe Gazzuzz may do it recommend

This your list is very wrong and that your budget is very unreasonable. Even some of the cars that comes with built in turbocharger don't cost 50k usd brand new. I may not have full knowledge about this but I know I don't need half of those things on your list.
The car has 275hp already. You think it can't handle 200 more?

Yes your engine can handle more hp but the main question is for how long?

your stock engine wasn’t built to handle the extra power hence the need for you to get higher quality racing pistons, rings, conrod and crankshaft. If you should turbo that stock engine without enforcing the interior part of the block it will eventually blow up ie. throw a rod and all your money and hard work will be flushed down the drain.

Car key fob programmers can not help you. What you need is someone who can program your ECU (brain box) or you’d buy an aftermarket chip that will run alongside your current brain box. The stock brain box will handle the car’s electrical systems and the chip computer will handle only your engine and transmission system.

When you install any, be ready to start running your engine lean or rich unless you tune the ecm. Beside that, can your internals handle the much introduced into the engine?

Installing the turbo kit isn’t even the hardest part. But how will you get tuned? You will also need a very high octane fuel to avoid knock. At least 92 octane fuel, which is not available in nigeria.
