Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram went offline because someone nuked(destroyed) the DNS and made Facebook available for purchase. If you search for the domain name facebook.com it will pop up on your domain tools but now it has been recovered.

Note that these two apps including Instagram – which are all owned by Facebook, and run on shared infrastructure – stopped working shortly before 5pm today October 4, Other related products, such as Facebook Messenger and Workplace also experienced same outage.

It is still unclear what has caused the issue although the company has suffered outages before. However, what matters most to many Nairalanders and indeed the businesses and everyone that use these social media platforms are that there are gradually coming back up.

I really don't care when it happened

Facebook was down because their DNS (Domain Name Servers; DNS acts like an address book, When you type www.facebook.com in the browser, the DNS resolver, responsible for translating domain names into actual IP addresses to connect to) names stopped resolving, and their infrastructure IPs were unreachable.
Ordinary this issue can be resolved quickly usually within minutes but because Facebook is so big with more the 30 million active users per time, this is were human behavior and application logic kicks in and causes another exponential effect. A tsunami of additional DNS traffic follows.

This happened in part because apps won't accept an error for an answer and start retrying, sometimes aggressively, and in part because end-users also won't take an error for an answer and start reloading the pages, or killing and relaunching their apps, sometimes also aggressively.

This is the traffic increase
Leading to a spike in traffic request thereby increasing the down time.
I hope Facebook has learned from this.
I hope people learn from this and reduce over reliance on social media cause it can one-day disappear with a snap of the Thanos fingers
