The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command to immediately carry out discrete investigations into the incident depicted in a trending video.



The video shows the moment a police officer slapped a passenger traveling in a commercial bus. According to the man who filmed the incident and shared it online, a group of police officers stopped the commercial bus to carry out a search. During their search, they found a laptop on a man who said he was a student and used the laptop for his assignments. The man claimed the officers did not believe the student and demanded N25, 000 bribe. The man claimed the officers took the student to a point-of-sale operator where they made the student withdraw N25, 000 and handed it over to them as they did not want it transferred to any of their accounts for easy detection. The man claimed that when one of the passengers frowned at the officer for corking his gun, the officer got angry and slapped the man and threatened that if he corked his gun, nothing will happen. The man claimed the police officer threatened that blood will flow if they do not caution themselves.



In a statement released, the spokesperson of the Nigerian police, Frank Mba, said the police chief has ordered an investigation into the matter.

''The IGP calls for calm, noting that at the end of the investigations, justice will be done to the victim of the incident and police personnel found guilty, brought to book.''the statement in part read

One of the major causes of police brutality ii've observed within the ranks and file of the force is illiteracy.

If you've interacted with them you'll notice one major deficiency amongst them which is lack of understanding of most basic things.
This deficiency triggers complexity and intolerance, frustration, anger and eventually violent attitude.

Going forward, there's urgent need to admit more graduates into the police force to minimize the propensity of this continuous police brutality.

That man must be severely dealt with. And with want his trial to be in public. We cannot continue to have such bad elements in the Nigerian Police. This is what we have been fighting against. We won't continue tolerate such behaviors. That's an IPOB kind of Behavior. It is very bad and must be condemn in totally. Let be charged with assault and a court of competent jurisdiction handle his case.

As much Police brutality should be condemned in its entirety, citizens should not be made to have the impression that they should not be civil and cordial to police officers on duty.

Some people are usually unduly rude to men of the police force on duty.

I watched the video and that guy was running his mouth before he was slapped.

Just as citizens have right to be treated fairly, police officers, no matter the impression and biases we have of them, have right to be accorded some courtesy too.

Can you please shut up. What I am reading from you is so disgusting. If the policeman knows the law, he should know that every citizens have the right to question them ni matter whatever duty they say they are carrying out and if you are smart you will know that him slapping the guy is an assault and he should be charged accordingly. On the other hand, the guy would not be running his mouth if the police were just doing their normal stop and search and not demanding a student to go withdraw money for them. Anybody that wants respect should try and earn it not by forcing Innocent people to do so.
