Hello Guys and gurus in the house.

Please someone dearly needs your financial advice.
My friend Joe (not real name) resigned early from his working place in 2019 and before the resignation, he had a pension plan with a Pension Company (name withheld). With the little he got from his former working place, he applied to retrieve his pension from the pension company but was told that he could only access 25% of the pensions for now.

The remaining funds, according to what he said they told him, can only be accessed when he clocks 50. That's more than a decade plus from the time of his resignation.

The funny thing about the whole ish is that, within the period he resigned, some older staffs(who were not up to 50 years in age) also resigned and had the same pension plan with him. They were also told the same thing about the 25% thing. Joe, called me up about a month ago and told me he and one of his old colleague that resigned the same time with him met at an event and they tried to catch up on how they've been fairing after resigning.

The discussion led to the friend laughing at Joe (in a mocking way), telling him that HE HAS GOTTEN FULL ACCESS TO THE REMAINING FUNDS IN HIS PENSION ACCOUNT. This guy is like a year or two older than Joe.

When Joe asked him how, he said he can't tell him how but he should understand that this is Nigeria. Joe has been begging this guy ever since to tell him not until yesterday that he sent a number to him via text telling him to call the number and tell the lady that he is from Joe's friend. He said the lady will link him up.

So guys and gurus in the house, I decided to throw this question here because I know most pension funds are handled by PENCOM and if it's still the same PENCOM I know, that rule of 50 years still stands.

So guys, please is it possible for someone to really have access to all his pension funds before he or she clocks 50? Sorry for the errors you might have encountered while reading and also the long post. Will appreciate if a response can be gotten as soon as possible. Thanks

He can only get 25% of his pension after 6 months of not getting another job. Then the remaining 75% is when he clocks 50 years.
Re: Can Someone Access Their Pension Funds Before Official Retirement Age by stasius: 5:28pm On Oct 18, 2021
You can assess up to 50percent of it but if course you have to meet various requirements.

For example you must not be working for a duration of time 6months or so plus other requirements.
Re: Can Someone Access Their Pension Funds Before Official Retirement Age by callbackaugust6(m): 5:28pm On Oct 18, 2021
From my personal experience when i lost my job from Telecom. You access 25% of your total pension if your not able to get another job after 3months. The remaining % can be access after you reach 50yrs or retirement. But what i dont know if they will release all your pensions when you meet there criteria .
Re: Can Someone Access Their Pension Funds Before Official Retirement Age by PatBrisley: 5:31pm On Oct 18, 2021
Yes you can access 25% after 4months of being unemployed, it’s called lump sum. They will ask for some documents like letter of resignation, passport, birth cert etc I can’t remember again. And the most important one is they will require a letter of accrued from your ex employer, so you really need good favour from your ex employer. Contact your pension company and they will give you details.

I received mine around April this year to support my business. It’s quite fast sha

You're not allowed to make an early withdrawal either. In short, most pensions won't let you withdraw funds until you reach retirement age. On average, that's at the age of 65. But, most pension plans give you the option to begin collecting early retirement benefits as early as age 55.

As early as 50 years

you Can access 25% of your total funds Only Once and once only before retirement after which the total some may be collected at once.
I know this is so for Stanbic Ibtc because I bank with them
Re: Can Someone Access Their Pension Funds Before Official Retirement Age by Greenback: 5:54pm On Oct 18, 2021
The pension plan is a good plan o... They deliberately make it hard for you to access and withdraw even the 25%. The idea is for you to try get something else doing to survive and lose interest in wanting to access and collect the dough. To me it ain't bad, your money is still available for you when you get to 50.

Even if you Stumble on how to collect the Whole money, I'll advise you don't.

Money Na spirit o.... You will Most Likely Squander the Money for your Retirement Now....

Nobody will be Able to Save you...When u need Money Dearly at Retirement( Remember Men are lonelier at old age)

This remaining 75% is suppose to be divided into Monthly incomes for you.... so you don't die of starvation at Retirement.
don't Go and Grab it all now and Destroy the future!

my 2 cents...

Yes
By virtue of section 7(2) of the Pension Reform Act,2014, an employee who disengages from employment or is disengaged before the age of 50 on medical grounds, under the provisions of section 16 (2) and (5) and is unable to secure employment within 4 months of disengagement, is allowed with the approval of the Commission, to make withdrawals from the account, although not exceeding 25% of the total amount credited to the retirement savings account.
Thereafter, such an employee would be able to withdraw the balance in the RSA in accordance with section 7 (1) of the Act.

Most likely his guys may have declared themselves mentally incapacitated to facilitate the release of the funds.
post=106848556:
This is the ONLY official answer to your question,
Coming from NATIONAL PENSION COMMISSION.

Access to the RSA will only be allowed upon retirement.
If an employee retires at the age of 50 years or more he/she can have immediate access to the RSA. Similarly, if an employee retires before the age of 50 years due to mental or physical incapacity, he or she can have immediate access to his/her RSA.

Whereas an employee who retires under the age of 50 years in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment will not access the RSA until after six months of such retirement if he/she does not secure another employment.

Goodluck to your friend!

That used to happen before now. People do go to court to change their date of birth, use some connections to access their funds. But now, this era of NIN, u can't achieve that cos it's your NIN they use now.
