Scrap them and bring in new bodies that would be performing the same functions as the old ones so what's the need? |

anorexicmuster:Tourism alone can earn Nigeria mad revenue if correctly positioned! That will not be possible untill insecurity of any kind is completely eliminated! Very simple, just tell foreigners my country is fine (but make sure it has naturally fine sceneries or create artificial ones) come and enjoy yourselves. Is this a hard thing to do? . May God deliver us. |

nograv:And I AM SAYING....that we could have earned FIFTY TIMES THAT from being a manufacturing, rather than an oil dependent country..that is the point of my comment. And I am not EXCUSING anyone. Thank you. |

anorexicmuster:How will it be a manufacturing based/oriented country when science & tech is somehow dead! The thing dominating majority of Nigeria mind is religion & romance(erotic) in their dreams, before going to bed, 24/7! They seldom reason sciences. Up till today they still hire alot of whiteman expatriate to handle highly complex technical projects. |

VeeVeeMyLuv:Well, that's up to us. At some point we are going to have to accept that oil money is not enough for all of us, even sans corruption...and start using stuff to make things. And the same goes for other African countries, and the non-African countries too. The truth is, the UAE looks rich...but if it made things like cars, aircondtioners, phones, computers, etc...even just for the Arab world, it could have been much richer. Same for Nigeria, same for other African countries. |

anorexicmuster:I dont buy your idea, its abt incompetent and wastage and years of corruption. Lets compare two states of ebony and other state abia, one recieve more pay frm federal govt, yet one does more wonders than the other. Even with scarce resources, with concrete planning and right leaders, at the long run we can turn a dessert to a huge metropolis. Slow and steady wins it all, just look at whats happening to the loan gotten from china, is that the attitude of ppl wanting to grow? |

VeeVeeMyLuv:Thanks and in response 1.The point I am ultimately making is that the UAE looks rich, it isn't rich. Most of its nice things were built on imports...which it can afford because it has the money to do so...because it produces 2 million barrels of oil for 11-15 million people...compared to Nigeria which produces the same amount for 200 million people. 2.And that leads to my point....both Nigeria and the UAE are in the same place because they are both dependent on oil. The UAE looks nice because it has a much smaller populaiton than Nigeria. If Nigeria had that small a population, we would be looking like the UAE. 3.The only way we can suprass the UAE is simple. USE OUR RAW MATERAILS TO MAKE GOODS AND SERVICES TO MEET NEEDS IN THE WORLD. 4.So, how does my point excuse bad leadership? My point instead shows how we have bad leadership. We have bad leadership because we sell raw materails, at prices we don't control..and overimport. If we wanted to look like the UAE, we would have had to sell oil at $130 and above for several years, without the oil price falling at all. Meanwhile, if we did like China, Japan, etc...and used our raw materails ...we would get somewhere. I am angry with you guys for thinking I was defending bad leadership. That is not what I was doing. We should leave oil alone, and use our resources to make stuff the world needs...and we should stop being dependent on imports...like the UAE IS. Modified Economists have long known about “Dutch disease,” which happens when a country becomes so dependent on exporting natural resources that its currency soars in value and, as a result, its domestic manufacturing gets crushed as cheap imports flood in and exports become too expensive. What the PISA team is revealing is a related disease: societies that get addicted to their natural resources seem to develop parents and young people who lose some of the instincts, habits and incentives for doing homework and honing skills.Source: Pass the books, hold the oil, by Thomas Friedman. |
