95% of buildings in Lagos don't have building approval, sometimes due to the unattainable conditions attached. The 5% with approval are shady ones got through influence.
I am sure that building was being erected by a politician or goverment contractor through a proxy property developer that bypassed all building codes.
You will only see these Lagos ministry officials going to hinterlands and developing areas of Lagos marking buildings with red/black "stop work" letters, but become very mute or easily bribed off when buildings are constructed in high brow areas.

I believe they have building approvals just that d approvals aren't issued on merit. They issue approvals to make money without doing due diligence on d buildings. They come and paint ur house red and ask u to stop work so u can come settle. U no our civil service is terrible

why are people strolling casually when they should be actively trying to survey the scene and look for survivors?
Probably because they’re scared other buildings would collapse also and get them trapped too. angry These are similar buildings and definitely same quality

Whenever I see these high-rise buildings in Nigeria, I'm usually afraid, because of the ineptitude of Nigerians.

We haven't been able to successfully handled anything in this country. Most of these buildings are deathtraps.

In other countries, you'd find buildings that were built hundred of years ago and are still standing..
You couldn't have said it any better

What a terrible way to start the month. Construction companies should value peoples lives and quit using sub-standard materials for building houses. Erecting houses shouldn't be about profit alone but safety of the occupants also, which should be taken very serious. Make survivors no go sue dem now.

Were you the one who sold the substandard material to them? The chances that a 21 storey building was constructed using substandard material is almost zero.

Most of these are caused by structural design flaws.

Lagos is not a state where anybody should erect more than a two-storey building. The land is not strong enough to hold such structure. It's a soft, riverine ground

Assumption and generalization are the lowest form of objective discourse.

Less than 0.5% of high rise buildings in Nigeria have collapsed. There are buildings in Nigeria built years ago still standing.

Even in developed countries, high rise collapses. This is a report of a building that collapsed in 2021 in Florida, USA.

Don't throw the baby and the bath water away. One collapse in Ikoyi cannot represent the whole of Nigeria.

It's one of 2 things, either the design of the building is structurally faulty or substandard materials were used and both will never happen if construction of this magnitude was handled by a competent builder with track record. Quality control and competence was compromised somewhere, either the owner of the structure in a bid to cut corners gave a project of this magnitude to baba Shakiru builder. This can easily be compared to our Nigerian project, you just cannot give what you don't have. When you populate the administration of a country with misfits, quota system illiterates and touts and you are expecting structure, economic and social advancement, then you need emergency psychiatric help

Threads like this shows how easy it's for people to castigate you when something goes wrong. Some are even calling the engineers quack.

When you are constructing something as high as 21 storeys, so many things can go fatally wrong. It has nothing to do with substandard material. It could be from a very simple and insignificant miscalculation.

Take it easy with the judgements.

On the contrary, 95% of the buildings have one form of approval or the other. If you know the number of agencies that will be.on your case before you lay one block, you would not say what you have just said.

If it is possible to get approval before urinating, LASG will want to give sushi approval. The monitoring spirits from the state and local governments na winch.
