The owner of the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi was given approval to construct only 15 floors....

Gbolahan Oki, general manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has disclosed that the owner of the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi, was given approval to construct only 15 floors.

Oki told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that the owner of the property has been arrested and would face the law because people have died in the disaster.

“He got an approval for a 15-storey building and he exceeded his limit. I am on ground here and the materials he used are so inferior and terrible.”

“The materials he used, the reinforcement, are so terrible. He got approval for 15 floors but built 21.

“I think he has been locked down. He has been arrested before now,” he said.

The GM said four people were rescued alive and three people died, adding that rescue efforts were still ongoing.

“We are still here and have four machines working as at this moment,” he said.

At least 50 people are reportedly trapped under the rubble after the building collapsed.

The building, located at 20, Gerrard Road, collapsed at about 3p.m. on Monday. (NAN)

Tell that to the birds ...

He got approval for 15 floors but went ahead to construct 21 floors while you all stood by and did nothing.

Whatever happened to regulatory supervision?

Gerard Road is a very busy road in Ikoyi and there is no way such noticable infraction could not have been noticed till it collapsed, Lagos State should be held responsible 100% for the avoidable lives that was lost.

Maybe after seeing how much was spend on the foundation he thought it can carry more load, not knowing it doesn't work that way.
Going above the engineering calculation is always disastrouse.

I think the regulatory bodies rarely go to site(unfounded by me)
They just stop by the head office and drink tea, collect their envelope and leave. Sometimes they send an intern

This man deserves to be sacked
It's all a failure of the regulatory agencies no matter how you spin it.
Someone went beyond what you approved and you're not aware?

Believe it or not, this is proof that power can sometimes override common sense. The owner of the building was a stubborn man, how the hell do you add extra load on a building of this magnitude? Even before the collapse, anyone who passes Gerrard road and knows that building can see clearly it leaned slightly to the side. That's proof it was impending disaster.

Some of the Mason that survived said cements were peeling off the pillars but the said man asked them to patch it up with plasters. The owner of the building is the elder brother of the SA to Vp Osibanjo, it makes sense as to why the building was unsealed. On a normal day, that building should have been brought down since last year.

Sadly, the stubborn he-goat took innocent would with him. Sad embarassed

So six was added between July last year to October this year and the government were not aware. Now that it collapse they are making noise.
Oh! LASBCA deliberately avoided to talk about why the building was sealed and unsealed last year. They are afraid to talk about payment made to remove the seal to continue work and to pacify some pockets

You were sleeping? undecided

You should be arrested and prosecuted for wasting human lives!

Anyway, does anyone's life even matter in your country?

Blame game just began.. After wasting lives. When the said (murderer) owner added 16th,17th floors, the agency traveled out of Nigeria I guess. Stupid people!

When you people give approval for 15 floors, did you set out to check they were actually following the approval, did you deal the building when ur agency realized they have went against the approval by building 21 floors instead, or waited for disaster to happen before u come out to say nonsense as usual

Price of corruption.
Some people & agencies must have compromised after money illegally changed hands.
We have to up our game in Consequence Management. Guilty parties must face the full wrath of the Law.
Unfortunately it will not bring back the dead, but at least it will serve as a deterrent.

Do you know no one will be imprisoned for this deliberate incessant killing cos this not even negligence, it’s purely an attempts to curse may harm and havoc in Lagos.

Foolish man talking should be sentenced to life imprisonment.
You approved 15 stories, while previous engineers on site said they can’t even guaranteed the authenticity of the building from the fourth floor. So once you approved, that’s all? No supervision, no enforcement, no findings…. What’s this man qualifications self, don’t be shocked am medical doctor could be the boss in that parastatal self.

He probably took him the owner of the property along to beg the governor, alots have been taken as bribe.
He should be arrested along with who ever unsealed the property.
