In 1804, Fodio, a learned Fulani, declared war on despotic leaders.

The state was as large as it was captured, extending from modern-day Burkina Faso to Cameroon -- an area that took four months to cross end-to-end. The caliphate ended when its last leader was killed by the British in 1903.

But there is a deeper reason: the Middle Belt lies in Nigeria's religious faultline, between the predominantly Muslim north and mainly Christian south.

It is also a region that, historically, suffered chronic unrest.

Lying on the southern rim of the caliphate of Sokoto, the Middle Belt was largely populated by animist communities.
The Fulanis always;raided the Indegenous people in the north and mid westerners ;to form a caliphate ; caliph's troops provide slave labour for the plantations, salt mines or burgeoning iron industry which made the empire so prosperous.
