A lawsuit filed by Northern lawyers demanding referendum in Southeast moved a step forward with a January date set for the hearing. Also in court for todays hearing were lawyers representing different groups seeking to join the Northern lawyers. Some of the attorneys who spoke to journalists indicated that Nigeria as a signatory to African charter on self- determination is obligated to accede to people’s wishes and grant them the referendum. They also argued that granting referendum does not automatically mean division of the country but rather an opportunity for people to express whether they want to remain in Nigeria or not. They also claimed that this could bring about the much desired peace and unity once a determination is made.

I hope that when January comes, they don't move the date again. Referendum is needed.
