Good afternoon nairalanders,
Please I need your help and clarifications on a Nigerian used car I purchased last month.

So today, while on my way to FRSC office to do capturing for drivers license, I was stopped by police officials and was asked my driver’s licence and car papers.

So I showed them the permit I was given at FRSC office and the car papers of the seller that will expire next year May. And I also showed them the purchase receipt and change of ownership that me and the seller both signed including the witness.

So the police officials now said I should have done court affidavit and police report. After much delay they collected 10k from me.

Now the thing is that this is my first time, and the seller assured me that nothing will happen to me till I change the paper next year.

I need help, how do I process these permits so I don’t experience all this from police again till I change the papers to my name

OP instead of waiting till May next year, why not just do change of ownership and let the papers bear your names and get a new number also to save you from the extortion of the men in black.
Even if you have the affidavit and the police extract, some wicked officers will still come up with you're driving a car not in your name.

Just close eye and do proper change of ownership. It'll come with court affidavit and police report.

Police men and extortion Sha, well, you should get the police report and affidavit for change of ownership as stated by the police if you are not ready to do the full change of ownership. But if you have the money, do the change of ownership and make the vehicle legally yours.

This is my 3rd Nigeria used car, apart from the first I have not done any change of ownership. The car you're driving must not bear your name. The must important is the vehicle papers are up to date and a valid Driver's licence

I am the op. Got banned on nairaland. Actually I am ready to do the papers, but they are telling me it will take 2 weeks ? And also someone told me all the court affidavit and police report will be done by FRSC when I want to only change my papers that I don’t have any business going to station or court to do that on my own.

Well that can’t happen again sha, and I will surely change the papers to my name next week Monday

Thanks for your concern sir

Is simple. There's no law that state that the apart from the owner of a car no other person should drive the car. I don't know about other states but Abuja VIO are the once that advised me that I should not bother about change of name if I don't have the money to do that.

Please go through the right channel. Verify all the docs given to you. So many fake plate numbers out now, especially Lagos

You’re right. Abuja is the federal capital and law enforcement officers are always careful because they don’t know who is who.
Come to PHC even with the car in your name the wicked police will still want to extort you, and I’m sure that’s the case in order states.
Imagine the OP finding himself on a highway with those police without uniform and name tag and telling them that no law says he can’t drive a car not in his name. They now ask him to call the seller to confirm and the seller is not reachable. Just imagine what will happen. To be on the safer side he should change it to his name.

Well said. The only thing VIO/FRSC ask in Abuja mostly are Vehicle Papers and Drivers Licence. Police in Abuja seems to be very gentle as them no no who be who.
