For Soludo's emergency on roads repairs and reconstruction to be fruitful without eclipsing all state funds for other development, he must

1. Utilize CONCRETE Roads & Drainages USING DIRECT LABOUR
2. Revitalize the Anambra Roads Maintenance Agency (ARMA) to begin repairing all internal roads in the major urban centers with concrete.
3. Employ professional Engineers to lead the road ARMA in each major urban center where they are rebuilding the roads and drainages.

The concrete roads system using direct labor has been successfully used by poorer states to build cheap durable roads that have continued to last to date. Only very challenging intrastate roads should be awarded to contractors with relevant experience to do because of the engineering challenge and bridges required on such roads.

This method also improves the skillset of many youths who gain vital experience in roads construction and design which they can utilize in helping their communities build their own durable roads through communal effort and without the use of expensive roads construction companies.
I agree totally with the issue of concrete roads Obiano missed out big time. That's one place I commend Ebonyi state governor, he saved a lot of money doing concrete roads through direct labour. I think soludo should utilize it, what we needed most now is massive construction of dual carriage roads in our urban cities.

The issue with Ebonyi roads are not because they were done with concrete, but they were also done by illiterate bricklayers without professional and experienced road construction engineers supervising them . So they just pour the concrete the way to do "german floor" in local village buildings. It is the same situation of asphalt roads done by village contractors where they leave the surface so rough you'd wonder if it will be better not to asphalt the road at all.

Concrete roads does not mean doing it in the village way that Ebonyi does it with illiterate bricklayers. In Europe, South Africa, and America, they use concrete roads widely. Even for highways. Yet, their concrete roads are as smooth as ever because they take time for finishing to ensure the surface is very smooth. Not just pouring concrete and walking away whether it hardens with some bumps on top of it isn't the business of the illiterate bricklayer who has no sense of high quality finish.

I'd like to congratulate the people of Anambra on the election of chukwuma Charles Soludo. Even though I'm not from anambra state I believe governance is a serious business and should not be left in the hands of people who have not proven themselves as successful leaders of even a 10-man institution. I don't know anything about the politics of anambra but based on his profile I'd have voted for him if that was my state.

One hopes that he has a robust media presence, especially on social media. One of the greatest things I LOVE about Obiano is that he actually has a Facebook and Youtube page!

Obiano is the 1st Anambra leader that I'm aware of that has his own social media handles. Not pages of his media aids such Valentine Obienyem's page announcing Peter Obi's projects. That is why we rarely can find any of Peter Obi's projects on social media because he never had a social media handle. it was also part of the reason that he was unreachable even by ordinary citizens who just wanted to complain about his commissioners or something important on the Governor's Facebook or youtube page to reach him.

I hope Soludo will emulate Obiano and maintain social media pages not just to document his activities for posterity but also to make himself reachable by those whose only way of reaching the governor is via social media.

Very important

Especially on popular platforms like Twitter and Facebook. These two SM platforms are usually at the reach of every average Nigeria. You see how Lagos state govt use the Twitter platform? That should be the way Anambra Govt should be on SM henceforth. Most of our SE reps and politicians have zero SM presence. That’s why the citizens feel so disconnected. I know how many times Ariaria dirty market has trended on SM but Ikpeazu and his team seem absent on that platform...only Sam Hart collects all the accolades and trolls on Abia state.

Also check out the BMC crew. You know why dey keep winning most media attacks and arguments? Check am na. Even though most times they choose to be blind to the realities on ground. Check out Omasoro Ali Ovie on Twitter and see things

For me, Soludo needs to make the bold move to demolish illegal buildings and roads in Anambra cities. This is the most importnt thing lacking in the state. He doesnt need to build any new satelite city, he needs to finish Awka Millenium city to drag the elites scattered across Nigeria back to the state since their is now an airport or their easy movement.
He also needs to make sure the Anambra Airport functions to full capacity, infact the regional hub of air transport, I'm very sure Obiano could have made this happen if he had more time.
The dualization of major Anambra roads is one thing Soludo must do. Before Obiano, banning Okada almost seemed impossible in the state, even the state owing an airport, as we were made to believe Anambra billionaire transporters and okada importers will never allow it happen. Obiano took the bold step to ensure these very important things were done regardless of who is offended. The next bold thing that should be done is demolishing houses built along the roads and compensation, then dualization of old and new roads.

Very very important

Umunnem, our pple are busy building on roads. Individuals are extending their fences on our roads. If u think I am lying drive through the current transport routes linking through Amawbia. Very wrong!

I think that's why the point of using direct labor to build adjoining streets and internal roads in our cities and LGAs. While intrastate roads that usually experience high speed are done with asphalt.

The truth is that without the use of reinforced concrete and direct labor, there is NO WAY you can pave all the internal roads in Nnewi, Awada/Obosi, Odekpe/Atani, Nkwelle Ezunaka/Nsugbe, to Awka, and all the new urban neighborhoods even in 50 years. Using direct labor to tackle some types of roads was a masterpiece strategy by Ebonyi state. Else today, the entire state and their state capital would be filled with muddy-red earth unpaved roads.

Most countries of the world today are using concrete roads to save costs and build durable internal streets in their countries.

Even in America, all the internal street roads are done by the local government using their own construction workforce (i;e 'DIRECT LABOR"wink. Meanwhile, an average American local government is richer than an average Nigerian state. Yet, even the Ameican county knows that they cannot pave all the streets within their LGA unless they use direct labor! Even as rich as they are!

Don't think there's anything inherently wrong with asphalt. Execution is the main issue. Quack contractors often do a shoddy job and the road inexorably breaks down. I remember pictures circulated here on NL about one road in Imo tarred under the Rochas administration and the asphalt layer was so thin, it looked like it was painted over the sand with a paint brush. Of course the first rains quickly washed it away shortly after.

My brother their local workforce na our best contractors so let's not go their. Apart from functionality we should also look at aesthetics. If we desire modern cities, we should do away with mediocrity. Moreover, other options like road grade interlocks should be considered.

More importantly is forging partnership with the private sector. I even feel an executive order mandating landlords, especially in major built-up areas, to contribute to construct their roads should be considered. Many estate roads in Lagos were built using development levies. That is the only way places like Awada and co can wear a modern look. They normally have enough money to build 5 decking, but can't contribute 500k to build drainage.

Asphalt isn’t working for us because of kukere moves by contractors and politicians in charge. We need the direct labour and the concrete roads be employed. Dave Umahi did a wonderful job honestly. Driving through those newly constructed Ebonyi roads was so memorable and cool. Seemed like the car was in space..didn’t feel like we WAS driving via a Nigeria road grin

I agree with you on doing high-quality job and using the private sector, landlords, etc. But the truth is that those won't be enough to address the huge gap in unpaved roads.

I agree that the Ebonyi artisans do a rough job on the Ebonyi roads, but we can then look out to do a fine finishing than reject the whole concept altogether simply because of Ebonyi artisans. it is like rejecting to build your house with cement because contractors of your neighbor's house in the village did such a shoddy job. While you forget the houses built with cement in Banana island and Abuja where they paid attention to detail using the same cement!

Even Ghana is switching to a concrete roads policy to build durable roads as quickly as possible, and within their budget.

That is what everyone expects. But in Nigeria everything is always upside down.

Foreign and local Contractors charge between N200 million to N400 million naira for just 1KM of Asphalt road! If you are unlucky to have a culvert or small bridge they need to build, it can easily be N1 billion naira!

That is why folks are now seriously advocating for concrete roads as the few civil engineering foreign contractors in Nigeria now charge hundreds of millions of naira for just 1KM of asphalt road. Not just that concrete roads are cheaper, they require less technology to get it right as you can control the shape of the cement before it hardens. Most importantly, it prevents capital flight through these foreign construction companies and creates A LOT of jobs for the unemployed youths.

Like the Commissioner rightly stated, Gov. Obiano's weekly visits are a huge morale boost to the workers.

I hope Obiano continues his weekly inspections of the airport and ICC. Even if its just to see if Air Peace has built its counters and installation of television screens at departure and ticketing desk to show flight times and passengers entertainment.

Many of them have not driven on those roads but they will be condemning it with so much passion. One even said driving on it will spoil car, so it would be better if it was filled with potholes and gullies than smooth concrete? Another one rushed to bring YouTube videos from Ghana as the real deal, yet he forgot that Ghana is a country with access to international loans and foreign exchange earnings unlike Ebonyi that is just a state in Nigeria with very little resources at its disposal.

I find your assumed intellectual arrogance not only irritating but exceedingly vexatious! That is why the typical African will rather war war than jaw jaw! the more civilized thing to do is to ask those making such claims to back up their claim with verifiable evidence! not indulging in ad hominem attacks. There was a DNA test in 2017 and the result was "No ancestral link"

This is times of Israel

This is Nigerian media houses having a good laugh over the inferiority complex

You can submit your own sample to Israel, they will most likely entertain it and clarify you.

Sometimes I just imagine the kind of laugh Israelis would be having over this inferiority complex, especially after the DNA test

Stop this crab mentality and pull him down syndrome, it is despicable!

Umahi did solid roads, if you won't acknowledge that then swerve and stop yearning opata!
My brother nobody is trying to pull anybody down. What he said is pure truth.
I doubt you have visited Ebonyi state at all.
Apart from the fact that the work is being done by local labourers, for me Asphalt remain the best when compared to the kind of concrete road I do see in Ebonyi state with rough surface
No road mark and sign.

What we need is just to improve the quality of our asphalt road.
Don't forget that all the asphalt roads built by Ngige 18years ago are all still intact with road mark.

And the discussion abounds and the narrative changes as we emerge out of the ashes into greatness

I just left Ebonyi state for Anambra... I wish i was in the position to make videos.
Apart from the fact that vehicle does not accelerate smoothly on the concrete road,Afiko to Okigwe road that was built just last year is now a mess. The concert has crack allover with pot holes...

Can you name the construction company handling the project you just posted?? Or better still name any capital project you know in Ebonyi and the construction company handling it?
Sorry to say Ebonyi projects are being over hyped. Even the airport is being handled by local labourers using bamboo for scaffolding. if you doubt me; name the construction company handling the airport project as we all know that Anambra airport is being handled by Craneburg, Nike flyover Enugu is being constructed by IDC.
Apart from the first 2 flyovers Umahi built in Ebonyi state, others are poorly and locally constructed by local labourers. Go there and see things for yourself... Starting from the beam to the walls of the flyover are carelessly casted with rough surface... This is why he is covering the finished work surface with PVC plastic panel in the name of beautification.

Till tomorrow asphalt road is far better than concrete road.
