When I read some posts and comments from some of our Igbo people, I wonder why the modern Igbo do not teach their children the little of history that they know or even research to understand their roots. Who is an Igbo?
What many of Ndigbo do not know is that there is no ethnic group or sub-group that referred to themselves as Igbo. At best, many Igbo sub-groups had adjectives that they used in describing themselves but definitely not Igbo. For instance, before the advent of the whiteman in my part of Igbo, our people referred to other Igbo regions around my place based on the sort of war party or regalia they adorned while going for battles. These are Ota Nchara and Ota Nzu. So clans that rubbed clay before battles were called Ota Nzu, while those that rubbed bronze were Ota Nchara.

Now as to the matter of Igbo. No Igbo sub-group referred to themselves as Ndiigbo. It seems that this was not necessary since they knew they were all Igbo. However, when visitors from other clans, especially faraway clans came. Precolonial Igbos referred to such people as Onye Igbo, if such persons were an Igbo. There are basic traits with which Ndiigbo know themselves. These are our belief in ancestors, four market days of Eke, Orie, Afor, Nkwo, the Igbo language which has dialects and the centrality of Yam as a staple food and the ceremonies around it. Others are burial rites of passage, the Nze na Ozo title, an Eze Mmuo and a decentralized government structure in which every clan is governed by family heads. Also every Igbo family has an Obi. There could be more.

Now, if you had all these in your community before the advent of the whiteman and speak Igbo but claim that you're not Igbo, it means that the Igbo nation conquered your people the same period the Arabs conquered Egypt and North Africa and destroyed your culture (language inclusive).

An American cannot be accepted as an Igbo, but an Igbo man can become an American? Then they wonder why they are suffering in Nigeria? Tribalism will destroy Nigeria, no wonder they complain of wandering shepherds in the 21st century, no innovation, & we all know that for lack of vision the people perish.

Quite obvious you have never lived abroad?, secondly it is the same British people that created United States 1776 & Canada 1867 that created Nigeria 1914, Yes United States is a 100 times more diverse than Nigeria, in Nigeria all I see is black people? If you don’t understand simple queens or pidgin English in Nigeria, then you must be an illiterate, or a very native minded person?

Even Brazilians in North America are not regarded as Latinos, Hawaiians are not Asians, Native Indians are not Mexicans, Not all Asian looking people are Chinese American, The Khans from Pakistan, are not the Guptas from India, Mr Man you are blinded by your ignorance so I can’t blame you. The globe is beyond your myopic imagination.

I agree with most of the things you've said but I just wanted to point out that this statement below doesn't do justice to the premise of your argument:

The US is a country and Igbo is an ethnicity. The whole concept of nationality is primarily a function of paper works and quite frankly, a Nigerian can become an American just like an American can become Nigerian. However, an Igbo man cannot become a latino regardless of how long he lives in Latin America and likewise, a Hispanic man cannot become an Igbo man just by living with the Igbos.

In Nigeria, the importance of ethnic groups which fan tribalism is more pronounced than in the USA or Israel because Nigeria favour consumption over productivity, thus such ethnic identities are used as the basis for sharing power, wealth and privileges in Nigeria.



If we favour productivity, there won't even be need to be asking for 'State of origin' in Government documents.

I have always believed that if we can work on our diversity properly, we are destined for greatness

Because even stats have shown that nations who work on their diversity are the ones dominating the affairs of the world

But we need to get rid of tribalism and religious sentiments if we ever gonna make a headway.

Nigeria is the most dangerously diverse country in the world. There is no other country in the world that has near equal population of Christians and Muslims (or other two opposing religious ideologies) and at the same time has near equal population of three dominant cultures/ethnic groups: Igbo, Housa, Yoruba.


Every single thriving developed country in the world has a single DOMINANT cultural/ethnic/religious group (with clear majority). Every single one. And even those with semblance of high diversity has a very decentralized system if government totally unlike what you have in Nigeria.

Anything with two or more heads is a monster.

The divisions in the USA today is rooted on the fact that they have two opposing politic ideologies that have near equal control over the population size.

To start with, you have not proven that you have more sense than any other blackman based on how crude your reasoning and response is. If you have lived in US and Canada and this crude, you have no basis to criticize any blackman. US colonies were made of people from different countries. Did they accentuate diversity? If they did, today, there would have been at least 4 official languages in US, a state like Louisiana would be French while Texas would be Spanish. Why did the Americans work hard to end Russian language in Alaska if diversity is such a great idea?

It is the same foolishness that you accuse the blacks of exhibiting that the whiteman is careful about. What Europe and North America does not promote is what you're promoting for Africa. Do you think Rwanda would have had genocide if the Hutus were in only one country, say Burundi instead of being spread in Congo, Rwanda and Burundi? Commonsense dictates that the Tutsis were better off in one country instead of Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. Africans are tribal people. Even in the US, native Americans still retained their tribal values and cultures. It is an anomaly for any black African to allow themselves to be fooled with the concept of diversity. Diversity as deeply as entrenched in Africa is retrogressive. That is why in America, the natives are hounded in reservations.

To conclude that your sojourn has not benefited you as a blackman, this post is not about diversity but about tribe, but your black heart out of hatred for Ndiigbo could only respond with foolishness. You expect Africans to expunge their tribal roots overnight while you're exhibiting tribal hate against Ndiigbo while feigning sufferstication. Is that how Americans and Canadian debate in their forums? By responding out of context?
