Many thanks to this great ambasaddor of the yoruba culture.

A culture dies when its not written. Note not when its not spoken, but when its not written.

The names of the pieces are actually hilarious.Pawns are the real MVP in chess.their not just the iranse but the abobakus. Excellent description, although the secret is they can become anything they choose to be as long as they make it to the other side.

That said heres a funfact. The yoruba language in its correct use is mastery of the act of description. Talk of how things are named in yoruba and you'll know the language is creative and encourages descriptive expression

And my favourite, the phrase gudugudumeje yahyah mefa translated excellent. It was a whole story summarized by the yorubas.they asked what was the white mans feedback and they replied he said good 7 Times, " gudugudu meje, and yeah yeah 6 times "yahyah mefa"

And that ladies and gentle men is how the cute phrase gudugudu meje yahyah mefa came to be.

So here on the pages of nairaland as a son of the soil, I support abobaku for the naming of the pawn.(e.g this describes aptly the agberos of Lagos). We need someone to second this so it becomes endorsed.

Modified. I have had a change of thought on this nomination. So as not to promote or endorse electoral violence I propose supporting the adoption of iranse instead of abobaku as the yoruba nomenclature for the pawns

Don't get it twisted Yoruba doesn't have letter H. So the spelling is wrong. It is either Ṣ or S. Same with using K to pronounce some words. Like Ópọ̀ (it's much) where it's been spelt okpọ́ also Pẹ̀lẹ́(sorry) where it's been spelt as Kpele.

I wish I took my computer skills serious right from time. I wish to create games in Yoruba for my fellow Nigerians but not how to begin be ish.
Thanks for your notes;
However, I'm quite sure you've heard about the epic name; Haruna Ishola?
In Yoruba Language, SH is the same as Ș.

Relatively, in the first line, I used SHÉÈSÌ and in the second line, I purposefully used ȘÉÈSÌ just to reflect the diversity of the Yoruba lingua.

Thanks.

What about the bishops?
NNTR:
This is hilarious bastardising it as 'Ayoo Ṣẹẹsi'

Pawn - Iranṣẹ or Bọbaku
Castle or Rook - Aafin
Knight - Ẹlẹṣin
Bishop - Alufaa
Queen - Ayaaba
King - Ọba

So what about names like Shola, Ishola etc?
The 'h' should not be added. Their correct spellings are: Isola and Sola. The letter 'S' has a dot below it to indicate the 'sh' sound. There are two types of letter 'S' in Yoruba alphabet, 'S' and 'Ṣ'. The sound /Ṣ/ has the same sound with the English /ʃ/. This is why people always try to replace it with 'sh'. For example: spoon is Ṣibi but those without the knowledge of the sound write it as "Shibi".
The second sound, /s/ has the same sound with the English 'S'. Example: Simi = rest. Words like sit, seat, symbol and so on have the /s/ sound.

There is letter 'H' in the Yoruba alphabet, but it occurs in few words. For example: ahọn = tongue, ohun = voice/sound, etc.

To learn chess and master it need a lot of dedication and determination. You can begin with YouTube videos. When you understand the moves, start practicing on lichess or chess.com
Chess has three phases that you need to learn.
1. Opening game
2. Middle game
3. Endgame.
Learn the openings very well before you start playing.
