There is a general embargo on recruitment at the federal level. Any MDA that wants to recruit must get a written approval from the president.

The public universities are on 'life support' because, in order to keep them affordable to poor students , they are not allowed to increase fees to a level where they can compete on the global stage.

In principle, government pays them a subsidy per student admitted to help them meet up with costs. In practice this isn't enough...so many universities in Nigeria run at a loss. As a result...there is a lack of adequate money and facilities and thus bad graduates.

The private universities, on the other hand, have the liberty to charge sky high fees, meaning they have the cash to build better facilities than public universities, and in some instance, employ better lecturers.

For now, the public universites are running on name and reputation, but if they don't take time, all the good students would port to private universities. As well as the best lecturers.

Infact funding for public universities is so bad that three years ago, the VC of ABU was complaining that he does not have the cash to cover overhead costs easily.

That's why ASUU goes on strike. But if government were to meet their demands, it would involve spending at least one third of the national budget on just universites. (my estimate). Not possible.

Most of the juicy jobs in this country are advertised in-house. Via referrals.

Get someone in the system, NUC or just any school to get informed whenever there's an opening anywhere.

Or just package your credentials and start distributing! Don't wait for adverts, you no go see!

I've been on the neck of the Deputy executive secretary (admin.) at NUC. But, he always told me nothing for now. That I should exercise patience.

Let's be optimistic as the 2022 budget will be passed soonest.

But unless the embergo is lifted, you can not proceed to documentation which in its self is another issue with the IPPIS ASUU have rejected and have recommended the University Transparency and Accountability system UTAS. It's one of the 7 problems the strike threats are about .

The university i attend employed some lecturer this year o, because when we came back after covid/ASUU palava , we saw new faces in our department .

They recruit internationally. Go to futa or federal poly Ado Ekiti and prove me wrong

Maybe when universities are allowed to increase fees to 200000 naira per session or more then they may have the cash to pay for more staff

Simple reason is that the cost of subsidies on petrol is rising due to high oil prices and government is taking money from education and other sectors to keep prices of petrol low

And IMF doesn't want to loan money any more

My opinion though

Please, do Federal Polytechnics also have loggerhead with FG over IPPIS or is it only Universities ?

Do you guys actually sit down and think of what is going on in this country, it's like you guys are living in another planet, please I'm not trying to sound insulting here, the truth is at the pace at which the country is going, just expect more of this from anything that has to do with government, each time one person in government takes or makes a wrong decision, it affects at least one thousand persons in Nigeria, it seems like you guys don't know the extent of damage that has been done to this country....

It is obvious you are not getting the point here. Nobody is talking about the rate of employment in Federal Universities and Polytechnics in the country. The discourse centers on the fact that these institutions are not recruiting at all even when other Agencies of government are employing.

That is what I'm telling you, If the government created Jobs compared to the number of graduates coming out, Nobody will be bothered if institutions are not recruiting at all...
