There are ways they can get the subsidy right, we voted them into power to think.

Transportation is very important to Nigerians, if you increase fuel, you increase transportation, and reduce the residual income of the people, the flow of economic activity in the society is stagnated because the majority of the people have less to spend on basic items. The goal should be to put the money in the hands of the greatest number to be able to afford basic things, this circulates currency and economic flow across the nation. The role of government is to keep economic activities flowing to ensure continuous tax flows into government pockets.

There is no guaranty that the state governors will use the funds judiciously.

I have a bright idea on how government can eradicate corruption in the fuel or any other subsidy arrangements...the government can work with banks and create fuel cards, direct via BVN, every citizen will be given quotas/discounts when they buy fuel with the card, that will be issued by their bank. CBN and banks can do the plus and minus. This will eradicate subsidy fuel stealing or movement to other countries. Use the banks. Government should think smart...the people deserve subsidy/welfare or whatever you want to call it.

Fuel is very important, every small business owner has a small generator that uses fuel, government should encourage these businesses...if cost of production is too high, prices for goods and services will increase, and this will reduce demand, discouraging business owners from going into start ups and entrepreneurship.

The economic advisers must think this through.

Quick one.
I rather think we vote them in to 'lead'. Knowledge is not the sole preserve of government and there are far more think tanks outsides of government than there are in it. Government only needs to be skilled in listening and aggregating and assimilating ideas to be successful.

Your argument is valid.
Energy and Petroleum costs/prices are critical to any nation on earth but the struggle has always been between national economies and the economies of individual citizens. Someone must pay and so far in the history of Nigeria the people have allowed the government take all the hard decisions.

But step back and realise this. Government is US. We pay for this one way or the other and this subsidy thing has taken value out of our pockets silently and assuredly. We are getting poorer as a people year on year. What the removal of subsidies will bring is order to this chaos. We will be hit by massive inflation no doubt but we will succeed in removing the last excuse any government (present and future) has not to develop this country properly.

The state governors are not good people, you and I know this, what are the state governors doing with all the funds they get?

Giving more money to state governors to the detriment of the people will lead to more poverty and money for a select few.

It is important, indeed imperative for money to flow in the hands of the greatest number. Small business creates more than 70% of employment/empowerment in Nigeria. Give state governors more money it only goes into politicking. Please be realistic.

Fuel subsidy helps put more money in the hands of 220million Nigerians. Government should get the subsidy mechanism right not scrap it.

I didn't say it is the sole duty of government to think...but they are there being paid with public funds, as workers to find solutions and indeed think smartly...like public office holders in other nations are thinking.

They have a job to do, if not capable, they should resign, like political offices holders in other countries do, they are not there to get paid, not to think. They must think, they are the managers of the society, most times your thinking amounts to just threads and articles or books, but they are the decision makers, their ability to think we'll matters much more, the people must vote in thinkers...so you miss the context.

I agree with you.

This useless Govt had 6 years to prepare for removal of fuel subsidy but did nothing.

It is well.

Instead of removing a slug attached to our skin slowly and elongating our pains, it is better to remove it once and for all and bear the pain for a short will.. The thing is that even before removing the fuel subsidy, fuel had increased from 45 to 87 to 120 to 167 Naira and yet we didn't die. Let them just remove the slug (subsidy) once and for all and let all the inflation happen once and for all. We will still survive.

I wish they can be focused on this stand
I don't understand why we can't refine our crude here.
It's just like saying the cost of garri in America plus transport should be the cost here in Nigeria because we don't have grinder, frying pot and sieve to make enough garri .
We have been paying subsidy for foolishness.
Fractional distillation is the process for breakdown of crude to pms, diesel etc.
Militants use crude methods to make pms .why can't we make use of better process and produce these products.

They want to fix the Port Harcourt refinery and it's going to cost $1.5 billion which was take almost 5 years for the repair to be done. Should they keep subsidizing fuel for another 5 years before the refinery is completed?

Fuel subsidy or not,

Why should we pay through our nose for what we have in our soil,

Especially, the Niger deltans , why should we pay high amount for what is deposited free in our soil,

It's a pity , useless leaders since independence,

When the oil dries up, you people will buy PMS at N5000 per litre,

Useless country
Even Saudi Arabia that has crude oil and produces more than times 2 of Nigeria with a population of 4 times less than Nigeria still pay over N300 for their fuel.
So because crude oil is in our soil does that mean to refine the oil is free of charge? Won't you build and maintain the refinery? Won't you pay the workers and engineers in the refinery? Why does Nigerians like free things..

Subsidy removal aka price deregulation in truth is not a destination but a journey.
It does not specify what the price eventually will become but the fact that government on behalf of the taxpayer will no longer pay to keep prices stable no matter what economic winds blow.
So it can go higher than that 340 or lower, just as the price of AGO swings.

you are absolutely right

If you are not willing to pay a fair price for petroleum products then it will remain scarce because no one will invest in it.
I always use this example:

If you plant yams for a living, the only benefits your profession will accrue to you is access and availability to yams constantly.
Anytime you take one out of the yam barn to eat you incure a cost that MUST BE RECOVERED if not down the line you will run out of yams.
Nigeria's oil reserves only gives us access and availability. It does not not give us the latitude to consume it at any cost because it requires production at the least.

The fact that we have been consuming it for decades while not paying a fair price to keep production going is the main reason why three decades ago all the refineries collapsed. It is the reason why only Dangote is venturing albeit with so much difficulty.

I usually ask folks.
How do you define water, a social commodity?, an essential commodity?, an industrial commodity?. a commercial commodity.....
Afterall it is God given, it is found almost everywhere on earth but there is no one on earth who will not invest in water one way or the other to have and use it, so it is not free and i will be damned if people go round giving free water anywhere from rural villages to urban mega cities.

Nigerians should wake up to the realities of what makes societies work, develop and prosper and learn to build their country in the knowledge that nothing of value comes cheap or free.
Exactly the example I wanted to use about water being everywhere but its not free. Cos some Nigerians think that because we naturally have crude oil in the soil then fuel should be free

Regardless... The focus should be on stopping importation of refined product and that can only occur when our refineries are made functional.

This is the biggest scam of all..... Everywhere now the sermon is about why we need to eliminate subsidies because of the drag on government resources and how a lot of funds are being stolen in the name of subsidy.

Nobody is talking about why after 6 years of the current administration not one of the 4 refineries has been fixed with all the monies pumped into each on a regular.

No one is talking about why the initiative of stopping fuel supplies to stations around the border and tightening our border controls to eliminate smuggling across the borders by tankers has been relegated to the archives. Why was the initiative to tighten border controls stopped? When it was being implemented we were able to identify more accurately our daily fuel consumption as a country and it was far less than the 60million litres being touted.

No one is talking about improving the metering systems at the ports to improve efficiency in measuring the amount of imported fuel being brought into the country so as to improve the accuracy of what is being subsidized.

No one is talking about stripping to the barest minimum the charges, carriage costs and levies imposed by government agencies from customs and others on the imported fuel to reduce as much as possible the landing cost of the imported fuel.

No one is talking about the failure of the deregulation of diesel and kerosine especially of diesel as the high price has had attendant negative impact on our manufacturing industry which is faced with hydra-headed challenges of no electricity, multiple taxation and galloping inflation. In fact it is the increase in diesel prices that has encouraged the growth of the bunkering sector where the locally adulterated diesel is in high demand because it's cheaper.

All we keep hearing is that it's a necessary pain we have to go through just like privatisation of government agencies was touted to us.

Tales by moonlight.
