I read that the reason why the death toll was so high, ( thousands of bodies have still not been found) was because what erupted from the volcano was pyroclastic flow instead of lava.

Lava moves very slowly, giving you plenty of time to escape whereas pyroclastic is exremely fast with speed reaching 100 miles per hour.

If you're caught, you're caught. There's no escape.

If you've seen the movie, they perished that much because they ignored the warnings.

They saw the warnings (light earthquake/tremor) and the mountain was spewing ash for some days before the eruption.

Unfortunately, the coastal city had only one exit(harbour).

Thousands of people trying to get on few available boats.

Yeah, they were very stubborn about it but you have to remember that this was 2000 years ago and they did not have much data to work with.

There was an eruption in the same area almost 15 years before this and no life was lost. They probably reasoned it would be like that one, but they thought wrong and lost their lives.
