Carbonated drinks are not a vital source of calories.

How will it cause 'mass hunger'?

Why can't these politicians reduce their allowances?

Why can't saint Buhari stop globe-trotting and save the country traveling allowance, aviation fuel cost, and jet maintenance costs? Prof Akunyili already told us why saint Buhari is flying around the world — to make easy legal money from traveling allowance. If he's considerate, he would save that money and use it to help suffering Nigerians!

Taxing Nigerians to death to fund your expensive lifestyle is wickedness

When they start charging for beer then I will revolt, don’t drink carbonated drinks
Beer and spirits already have excise charges on them same as tobacco. Reason they are relatively more expensive when compared to soft drinks.

Everyday new tax, while they keep generating funds from multiple taxation and imposition, they keep blaming Gej for their woes, they keep making Nigeria and Nigerians poor, anyone supporting this evil will die slowly and painful death the same way Nigerians are suffering and dying, that's all i can say

Plastic bottle of Coke went from N100 to N200 and will rise again after this tax.

Does this government ever understand that companies don't pay tax but it's citizens who eventually pay off the taxes?

Why taxing our income, taxing the food we eat and for every transactions we make?

They increased VAT by 50% last year, a move which many people saw as counter-productive. So what have they achieved with that? Record high inflation. Unemployment. Rise in social vices.

We like to copy Britain and America in everything. Go to Dubai - low taxes, high productivity and high goverment revenue. This is Economics 001 for developing countries. When you are really developed like the US and when your tax net is wide and you are able to provide a lot of services, when wealth has increased significantly, then you can toy with taxes. ECONOMICS 001.

6+ years after, this administration is still struggling to come to terms with basic thinking.

What mass hunger are these dolts talking about? Do they even know what they are talking about ? Mass hunger to buy carbonated drinks ? Higher prices for sure but those who want it have never been deterred by higher prices. They should charge the excise tax already. Glad to see nigeria is taking taxation more seriously now than before

.

The rich are not paying commensurate taxes. Large companies find there way to manouver with taxes. The tax net is not wide. They dont go to chase tax in Alaba, Idumota and th likes where big informal business is going on. Are we really taking tax serious? I think we are just increasing taxes to those who have been paying.

Have you been to Ghana to see what they charge as VAT ? A smaller economy than Nigeria way more in VAT then nigeria does. When we criticize we must be objective. The truth is Nigeria has one of the lowest tax bases in the world and that has significantly impacted revenue sources due to our over reliance on oil receipts. There is a reason why the Britain and America you mention are doing well and this is because there are tax dollars to fund critical
Areas of the government. Please read up on Dubai s economic challenges being faced recently and learn how the government has been retooling to face its new future. How exactly is nigeria supposed to pay for the services before implementation of tax reform ? Agreed on the need to increase the tax base but everyone as is done in working economies must pay their fair share. This is how Nigerians will learn to demand for accountability and prudent use of resources when their tax naira is involved

Nigerians dont know it, but they have actually been having it good for a long time in terms of tax. Due to the fact the economy is oil based, in the past govt has only relied on this revenue. As oil revenues continue to decrease, government will start to find new sources of revenue hence new taxes.

Thisis2raw:
They refuse to tax sugar companies, because Dangote sugar.

Why not tax sugar companies than carbonated drinks
A valid point you raised. But I won't subscribe to your suspicion of pro Dangote bias. Yes, sugar is the main substance here, but there are healthy derivatives of sugar e.g milk, certain medications and foods. Taxing sugar itself will have a wider negative effects on both the healthy and unhealthy applications of sugar and this would lead to a more general inflation.

Carbonated and sugared liquids aren't one of the healthy applications of sugar. And considering that the tax is intended to augment the govt finance of free primary healthcare (which caters for such sugar-induced ailments as high Blood sugar, diabetes, Hypertension, etc.), It may be justifiable that the tax is restricted to the principal product causes - carbonated and sugared beverages.

Have a good day!
