They refuse to tax sugar companies, because Dangote sugar.

Why not tax sugar companies than carbonated drinks
reason why I said Dangote wouldn't be as rich as he is if not for monopoly.. You can imagine hypocritical government leaving Dangite sugar but going for companies that produce carbonated drinks...President Buhari is a terrorist and a tribal bigot

Good thinking. Those NA folks seem to have nothing better to do than think up ways to raise the suffering index of Nigerians! That's how they played politics with rice production up until rice and groundnut oil and even bread are now out of the reach of the common man. Carbonated drinks which used to sell for 100n now go for 150n still yet, they won't leave it alone! They will not look for constructive ways to add value but keep reaching for unintelligent and low hanging fruits. Pstcheew

Have you been to Ghana to see what they charge as VAT ? A smaller economy than Nigeria way more in VAT then nigeria does. When we criticize we must be objective. The truth is Nigeria has one of the lowest tax bases in the world and that has significantly impacted revenue sources due to our over reliance on oil receipts. There is a reason why the Britain and America you mention are doing well and this is because there are tax dollars to fund critical
Areas of the government. Please read up on Dubai s economic challenges being faced recently and learn how the government has been retooling to face its new future. How exactly is nigeria supposed to pay for the services before implementation of tax reform ? Agreed on the need to increase the tax base but everyone as is done in working economies must pay their fair share. This is how Nigerians will learn to demand for accountability and prudent use of resources when their tax naira is involved

Tax must be based on equity. Seriousness should start with expanding the base and not hitting the same set of people. Nigeria can track incomes and do equitable application of taxes. Yes, there is every sense in progressive increase of items like VAT but we must look at our circumstances. Why are companies including MNCs choosing Ghana ahead of Nigeria, knowing that VAT in Ghana is up to 13.5%? I think our first objective is to get the country to work, then government should show commitment to providing more and better services and facilities on the bases of taxes and levies collected. Not the common scenario of 'system is down' whenever you want to transact business with government. Even when paying taxes, the system isnt friendly. Improve the systems, pursue equity and transparency, impose taxes, improve services. Our airport taxes are high but what services do you get when you go there? People say Ghana airports are far better and friendlier than ours these days. We need the balance. It should not be seen that government continue to raise taxes and there is little to show for it other than to pay a bloated and far from productive government workforce.

Now you are conflating issues of governance with basic economic and taxation. Correct governance can be improved on and should be and there are many other issues such as ease of doing business and public infrastructure and others which may influence a company to set up in a country with a higher tax rate but to say don’t tax till you get it right , even when it is obvious the country is broke will not be good policy. There is also a part for citizen advocacy. If you hear Americans talk they will refer to their tax dollars and so the government know they need to be largely accountable as the citizens remit a lot and will demand accountability loudly. products sold by these particular manufacturer are not essential in any way and the excise tax costs being indirect will be passed to the consumer who must then make a choice to consume this or find an alternative so it’s not hitting the manufacturers bottom line . I expect they will simply raise prices

Is Nigeria really taking taxation serious? The very rich do not pay commensurate taxes. Large companies find there way to manouver with taxes. The tax net is not wide. They dont go to chase tax in Alaba, Idumota and the likes where big informal business is going on. Are we really taking tax serious? Or are we just increasing taxes for those who are already in the net?
You know I do agree with you that the tax base is not even close to capturing everyone that should be in it though some of these people are also being squeezed with all sorts of levies. What we need to figure out to me is a way to really streamline it to understand who pays what and where it is to be paid to… definitely broaden the net with a view to not letting ease of doing business suffer as a result of multiple taxation

Not sure what the fuss is all about. NLC should go and sit down. The duty is N10 per liter. So for the typical 33cl which most of us drink, that is additional N3.

I don't think additional N3 or even N10 will stop a decision to buy a soft drink. It's not like we all drink a coke every day.

What mass hunger are these dolts talking about? Do they even know what they are talking about ? Mass hunger to buy carbonated drinks ? Higher prices for sure but those who want it have never been deterred by higher prices. They should charge the excise tax already. Glad to see nigeria is taking taxation more seriously now than before
Do you how many Nigerians resort to bread and coke every morning ?

Before coke became available and affordable , were people not eating breakfast ? Are there no viable substitutes? Juices that are affordable?

Retail price of a litre of carbonated drink is about 300 naira. Additional 10 naira by excuse duty will make the industry lose 40% of demand.

How many percentage loss of demand did the recent increase from 200 to 300 a liter cause? They should be deceiving us, nobody likes paying any taxes.

NLC is wrong. Let The Excise Duty on Carbonated Drinks remain. Zanab Ahmed is unbokoharamish this time. The Duty will improve Government Funding.

A valid point you raised. But I won't subscribe to your suspicion of pro Dangote bias. Yes, sugar is the main substance here, but there are healthy derivatives of sugar e.g milk, certain medications and foods. Taxing sugar itself will have a wider negative effects on both the healthy and unhealthy applications of sugar and this would lead to a more general inflation.

Carbonated and sugared liquids aren't one of the healthy applications of sugar. And considering that the tax is intended to augment the govt finance of free primary healthcare (which caters for such sugar-induced ailments as high Blood sugar, diabetes, Hypertension, etc.), It may be justifiable that the tax is restricted to the principal product causes - carbonated and sugared beverages.

Have a good day!

So the government, this government cares for your health and they budget nonsense for health and loot it behind, which is the reason aso clinic doesn't have paracetamol etc some times? Hahahahah...

I like how many of you are like frogs in boiling water eing boiled to death and each time you find ways to make excuses for wickedness and evil.

When Buhari became president all he did was gradually but surely hand over almost all the security apparatus to his kinsmen by geographical area and many people down South applauded him, even romanticised the man's dangerous appointment pattern. Now he is about to go only for people to now clearly see the havoc the man has wreaked.

Keep making excuses for them. Someone raised a valid point but you rebuffed it and provided a sound medical reason for the government taxing fizzy drinks. For your information, Dangote has it easy in a lot of his business ventures. He is clearly a "government pikin".

The Nigerian government cares. Buhari cares... Chris Ngige cares. The finance minister cares. Emefiele cares. They all care.... hahahahahaha....
