Yeah you're right. She's from Abia. Umuahia side. She actually made it with egusi the day she told me about it. When she showed me the soup and offered me some to test, I didn't like the face. So I told her, "I'm full". grin.
I'm not a fan of achi. I prefer ede or Ukpor thickeners.

Oh.. so it's just the crunchy taste there is to it? Mtchew.. used to think it tastes like Mushrooms. In fact, I thought it was mushroom.

You're very right on this one. na Umuahia people soup.
When I tasted it, it was out of curiosity and it was the last I did...

I don't like achi as well..Growing up my dad never liked achi till now, so mumsy will never try to cook any achi soup in the house..Automatically none of my siblings like it as well...Ede is number one thickener.. cheesy

Maybe because it is traditional in the place I grew up...The oha soup, ofe owerri where ugu is the main vegetable and too many obstructions...

Funny enough, during my stay in Abia, it was very rare to see anyone use Ede or ùkpó as thickener...Even achi is being used in Oha soup sad

This is Leek , also called Scallion

Leek and scallion are two different plants.

In this case, the plant is leek.

I understand that those recipes refer to achara as elephant grass. However, when you do a search for the plant itself, you find the Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) which is certainly not the achara plant. undecided

We are looking for the name of the plant itself and not what some recipes choose to call it. undecided

Not my own part of Abia. Even if Ukpor and ofor become scarce in my village today, ( which can never happen though) my people will rather use akparata as thickner than achi.
Maybe you stayed in Umuahia side. We from Okigwe side hardly use achi.

Achara is absolutely not bamboo! If you have ever in fact seen achara, you would know why, just by looking at it, it can't be bamboo. undecided

Anyway, I found some interesting writeup referring to it as spear grass. undecided
A strikingly different vegetable plant on sale in some Lagos Area Markets is the "achara"- "the spear grass" vegetable. It is a rhizomatous, perennial grass with usually scally-like leaves, tufted base and slender inflorescence, rising up to one meter in height.

Botanically, the "achara" is known as " Imperata cyclindra, family Gramineae". Though the plant is prone to fire, the rhizomes are tough and rigorous and do survive burning.

The "achara" (spear grass) serves several purposes : food for man (especially people from the southern and south-eastern parts of Nigeria); the young foliage, being tender, serves as grazing material for stock; the older culms are used for thatching of roofs in the rural areas; the aqueous extracts of the leaves and stems have been been reported in laboratory experiments to show some actions on tumors. The root contains sugars. It is a proven diuretic and it's also used as an anti-dysenteri. Furthermore, a decoction of the dried plant is taken as a gargle for sore throat.

Culturally, the plant is invoked in a yoruba incantation "to make a husband fight with his wife"!http://digitalkobo09..com/2010/10/article-61-achara-spear-grass-vegetable.html?m=1

This is why it would be nice if someone would please upload a picture of the plant to help with the search.. undecided

Good...Uturu is closer to okigwe...Almost an Imo state lady sef.

Ok..This akparata, any English name for it? I will like to read up on it..Just getting to know it for the first time today.

Abacha, I thought it is potash or ngu (the water from burnt palm tree flower or emptied bunch) that they use in thickening that abacha or nkwobi?

Yes we were formally/ originally from imo state. Then under Okigwe before they carved Abia state and we were moved to Abia.

It is called mahogany seed.

It's the one they prepare in Lagos they use potash. In my village, they use akparata to make abacha sauce and it tastes better and purer than this Lagos potash version that will almost be tasting like soap. lipsrsealed
