A few absolutely CRUCIAL reminders:

Russia neither wants nor has any reason at all to invade country 404, with all its intellectuals already long gone (most of them in Russia, low qualified refugees when to clean EU toilets), its deindustrialized wastelands, its many neo-Nazis and zero natural resources (they already sold it all). In fact, most Russians are categorically opposed to any such intervention.

The only thing which could force Russia to use her ground forces would be a successful (and rather unlikely) Ukrainian invasion of the LDNR. Russia currently does have the forces needed for such a counter-attack in her western regions. She does not have the size of force needed to occupy the Ukraine.
Russia has the means to defang the Ukie military using only standoff weapons, Russian military experts believe that such an operation would take a week or even less.
In other words, the notion of a Russian ground operation to take Kiev is total, hallucinatory, nonsense. Ditto for the idiotic idea that Russia must invade in February before the frozen ground turns into dirt (Russian ground forces have no problems operating or fighting with dirt, snowmelts or any other natural phenomenon between -50C to +50C). That is exactly the kind of crap McFaul always spews (with this uniquely paranoid eyes and freaked-out facial expression).

But the fact that McFaul is a drooling idiot does not mean that he does not have access to what is going on behind the scenes.

The security of the Russian territory is the primary responsibility of the Russian leaders. Infact security is the most important. If your country is secured then your economy is secured too. Russia sees Ukraine as a buffer zone between itself and it's enemy (the West).

If NATO takes over Ukraine then that buffer zone is gone. So Russia is ready to take any risk possible to maintain the buffer zone. It has the capacity to take Ukraine but at the same time Russia does not want to see Ukraine burn. Because Ukraine is a divided nation already. There are many pro Russian in Ukraine as well as pro west. The percentage is almost 50-50%. Crimea fell to Russia today mainly because of the division in Ukraine. So if Russia move in & eventually conquer Ukraine. The people will be forced to be united against Russia, which will eventually give birth to another Afghanistan. Conquering a nation is one thing. But maintaining it is another.

But if Russia is pushed to the wall, it will launch full scale invasion. It worths the risk. The US will do the same if country like Mexico is seeking for military alliance with it's enemy.

You 100% right. Especially German & France. They don't like provoking Russia. Some of their leaders want Russia to join EU. The believe it is better for Russia to be on their side rather than on Chinese side.

The Germans refused to send weapon to Ukraine. They even denied the UK military plane take arms to Ukraine access to their air space.

Imagine the on-going talk. The EU is not invited. The crisis is in Europe and yet EU don't have a voice. The talk should be between EU & Russia not Russia & US.
