Why was NATO created? It was created to form a military alliance that will give the US an upper hand against the USSR in a war. The only threat to US then was the USSR. Now there is no more USSR. Russia is not as powerful as the USSR, But the West never dropped their military alliance expansion.

So if you were Puttin, and the organisation created to destroy you keep expanding to ur border, won't u react? NATO is a military alliance, which is a threat to Russia. Ukraine can join the EU, without having any issue with Russia. But joining a military organization that is created to fight Russia is unacceptable for Russians. Don't let the Western propaganda fool you. The likes of US & UK will do the same if they fond themselves in Russia shoes.

While you are largely right, saying Western propaganda is fooling me means you have agreed that you are not influenced in anyway by Russia's stance, which would be wrong.

NATO, while largely controlled by US, was an alliance to protect the weak, something that Russia is trying to do to Ukraine presently (bullying the weak). Don't forget that America will lose nothing by allowing everybody to fend for himself. But without NATO, many countries in Eastern Europe would have probably being absorbed by Russia.

Have you ask yourself why Russia decided to annex Cremea and Dombass despite the fact Ukraine rejected proposal to join NATO?

It's simple. Putin is a tyrant who sees Ukraine not as a sovereign nation but as part of Russia and will do anything to make it happen.
