Lagos Warns Commercial Drivers Against Fare Increase Over ₦800 Govt Levy by swaggerjack: 4:31am On Jan 23, 2022
The Lagos State Government has warned intrastate commercial drivers that the harmonised N800 daily levy they will each pay to the government starting from February 1 shouldn’t warrant an increase in transport fares.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said rather than creating an additional burden, the levy would stop multiple charges motorists paid to agencies and local government authorities.

The state and local governments, transport unions and other relevant agencies in the state on Tuesday signed an agreement on the ‘Consolidated Informal Transport Sector Levy’ to harmonise dues collected by the government from commercial motorists at parks and garages across the State.

The Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, stated that the N800 covered the local government levy, charges paid to the Ministry of Transportation, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority for clearing waste from motor parks and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.

He noted that the approach was part of the efforts to restructure the transport system and further boost the government revenues, adding that personal income taxes of the drivers would be deducted from the N800 levy.

Speaking on the levy, the state Chairman of the National Union Road of Transport Workers, Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde, aka Oluomo, said it would not stop drivers from paying their statutory dues to the union.

The development had generated fears of imminent fare increase among members of the public who believed they would be at the receiving end of the levy.

But Omotoso, in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, said the levy was not new and was a blessing to drivers and commuters rather than a burden.

He said any motorists, who increase fares as a result of the levy, was being mischievous and cautioned them against doing so.

He stated, “What we are doing is to ensure that drivers and passengers are protected. If the driver takes up from Badagry for example, and he is going to Lagos Island, between the two ends, there are about three to four local government areas and he has to pay some money at each local government.

“What the Lagos State Government is now doing is to harmonise the whole thing and ensure that once you collect a ticket from the take-off point, you don’t need to collect another ticket from anywhere. So once the money is collected, the local governments are going to get their own share there.

“There shouldn’t be (any increase). Any driver that wants to increase the fare because he has to pay N800 instead of N3,000 is being mischievous. That is why the unions are involved so that drivers won’t complain that they are paying N800 more.”

The commissioner also confirmed that the levy was different from the union dues and did not absolve drivers from paying for tickets issued by the unions.

He added, “They (drivers) pay as much as N3,000 to travel from one end to another and they are complaining. They are being carried along and many of them are embracing the idea (of N800 levy) and say that if it works, it will solve all their problems. If a driver pays N800 per day henceforth and anybody stops on the road claiming to be working for the local government, such person is committing an offence.

“But the levy has nothing to do with the unions because they collect their dues from drivers as members. A union has its own tickets and every driver gets it. If any driver doesn’t have it, the union has a right to demand payment.”

How are the poor commercial drivers meant to survive if they can pass any of the cost to passengers? That means they have an additional N800 to pay each day and not that is not including daily membership extortion fees to MC Oluomo and his boys, police, army and Lastma.

This is the legacy of Lagos the agbero state.

No. The sum what drivers used to pay in local government dues, garage cleaning dues, Ministry of transport dues and LASEPA used to be up to ₦3,000.

Now, the ₦3,000 has been moved into one single price of ₦800 which is a reduction in price so any driver who charges more is just been greedy.

Get it?

Honestly, I find it extremely hard to believe how commercial bus drivers survive with the levies. Though, I keep writing Tinubu and his sharks generated funds in Lagos, but this is a point I so much dislike him, and it is the reason the prayers of those against him will come to pass. He is just making everything hard. In markets, parks, and other public places, he just keeps adding more fees, fines, and craz.y ways of extorting Lagosians. Seriously speaking, this is wrong. I just wish someone who is competent can come up. But it is just sad Nigeria isn't a high intellectual human capital. Most are not smart and are easily controlled. No good person will get to a public seat easily. Only terrible and thieves always get there. And same people who complain of hunger are the same who vote for their oppressors. It always beat my imagination.

I have been bashing ibos not because I hate them, but to make them get serious and face this issue squarely. I wish they can just bring on board a good person. Really, we dont need a politician, but a technocrat who is also brutal. We need to erect mobile courts everywhere to send people to jail fast. Of course, we must invest in jails with the mindset of converting them to commercial centers later cos crime will eventually decrease and the structures cannot be idle. As in we need prisons in even every local govt...just do rubbish, and you are in jail. And those jails must be for reorientating and reeducating people. Places where they learn new skills. I want to see computerized jails. We let them even know their rights and teach them how to vote. Even, those old people should be sent to jails. It wont be like real jails, but places where people are made to start thinking like normal people.

What am I saying? There will be massive people who will submit themselves willing to go to such jails. I have this vision. Seriously, yes.

If these bus drivers are normal people, they can fight this battle well. But they arent all normal. They are terrible disgusting peoole, and it is why Tinubu and his boys can use them anyhow. Same with market people. Seriously, if just 10% of bus drivers in Lagos put together just one day levy of N3,000 each and pay a good lawyer, they will win so many cases on ground. But they are all terrible people themselves. At times, I don't pity them cos if you had had encounter with them, you will know. As a matter of fact, I do not use those means of transport anymore, and I dont even drive in Lagos. The traffic is too craz.y to think of it. I will rather use Uber or BRT (Lagos State government official transport system).

If you try to organize these touts called bus drivers to fight government, they are the same who will back-stab you. So, I dont pity them at all.

And truly, cos of that N800 increment, they will hype transport fare. Seriously, let me tell you the truth. Those bus drivers are always praying for such fees increment so they can use it as excuses to charge craz.y fees. Lol. When I was young, I used to take those buses from my high school to my house. Mehn! I so much hated them. Bless my parents who used to take me in comfortable car in the mornings. But returning home is a heck of pain. Where uber in those days? Lol. I had to do everything in me to not have prejudice against those hooligans called drivers and conductors. If I mention my high school, I know more than 80% of matured ppl here will know it cos it was very popular in those days, and still has such a high standard.

We need to start building special mobile "sharp sharp" courts and reorientational jails to save us from corrupt politicians in public officials and hooligans on our roads

Anyway. We mooooveeeee!

We all know it's not possible, the agbero will die on top of their money and the government officials can't help the motorist, unless they create another uniformed people to monitor this and make sure the motorists are safe, but then again Lagos state have too many uniformed agencies working under Lagos.
They are just after their money.

When LASG knows the billions the drivers are coerced to pay to the transport unions while LASG looks the other way as government revenue is illegally funnelled into the hands of thugs who account only to themselves! LASG must be joking!

In case you don't know, Nigeria is the only place in the world where citizens pay taxes to the government and then pay rates to touts! And such is sanctioned by the State!

This is called Awawa boys and One million boys democracy. Institutionalized and encouraged by The Don Corleone of Burdillion himself; Oga Hushcobar Tinubu!

This is evil. But they'll ofcourse defend it vehemently as usual.
