Nigerians are actually very bad at english especially the new generation. Just read articles on Nairaland. A good example is the common use of the word "staffs" instead of "staff"

I have noticed that Ghanaians and south African countries Zambia, Tanzania etc have a better grasp of English than Nigerians. Dont assume when speaking to a young Nigerian that they actually understand what you are saying. Nigerians have a habit of hearing one word and construing another meaning to it. Today Someone was trolling me because he clearly did not understand the meaning of the word "viable".

You almost made sense till you claimed those nations' citizens speak and write better English than Nigerians...

The fact that you are even using Nairaland (a poor and untrue reflection of the academic state of Nigeria) further makes one wonder at your objectivity.

Do some research sir.... Educated Nigerians actually speak and write better English grammar than their counterparts in most countries, even the Overhyped English speaking European nations.

Good call!!! For instance in the UK, there are very little interpreters and translators available in public services - police, courts, local authorities, social services departments. for Nigerian languages because they assume Nigerians can read, write and speak English functionally.

You are correct. But 90% of Nigerians will use that in a sentence written or spoken. And use it even in a formal document. I just used that as an example. But the list of grammatical blunders and incorrect words we use is endless. And I am talking of University graduates here who are supposed to be "educated"

And YES in Nigerian English, installmentall & installmentally are "words", used im many formal settings and Nigerian documents

See who is criticizing Nigerians, you can't even construct a simple reply in English language and you are criticizing over 200m people.
See how badly constructed your reply is, nawa o.

What's up with this irritating generalization you people always do whenever the topic is about Nigerians?

How many Nigerians do you you know?

I know Ghanaians that have poor understanding of English, same as some of those countries you mentioned in your reply.

Go to any BBNaija's related topic on any blog/site/page/group and see for yourself the point I'm trying to make.
Don't assume what is not the real situation/case.

You're nothing but a Nigerian-hating object, it's evident in your second to the last line.

I tire for the guy o...

Some Nigerians just enjoy downgrading their nation and fellow citizens for no reason.

The same social media I use with foreigners, even those from America and Britain! People who can't properly punctuate to save their Queen!

They know exactly what they are doing. It's simply a revenue-generating channel for them, they've really made clean, easy and sweet money from visa fees, now it's IELTS or TOEFL. They will never accede to our campaign, not in the nearest future. We too should fix our country.

Nairaland is a true reflection of the level of education in Nigeria especially when it comes to English. This is because everybody here has been to primary and secondary school. It is not in University you learn good English, if anything nairaland proves that by that time it is too late as many of the offenders here are graduates!!!

Oh please... Get off that high horse!!!

There is a clear difference, and distinction between being educated and having an impeccable grasp of the English language. Even learned British citizens don't have a perfect grasp of their very own language. Fact!!!

It takes special interest in this language to master every aspect of punctuation, tense usage, contextual usages, etc... I know a lot of these things, not because I'm "highly educated", rather due to personal interest in creative writing and public speaking grammar which led me to do more research into these things.

Come to even think of it, your write up above criticizing your fellow Nigerians is replete with grammatical blunders!!! grin

We really have misplaced priorities in this country sha. So of all our problems in the country IELTS is what we should be protesting about?

With the terrible English we speak and write in this country? You see people say "I base in Owerri" or "Am from Ibadan" or the really horrible one of "Are my to bring my credentials along?"

Even those that think they are very elite will drop a bombshell of "I will pay installmentally "

We speak a variant of English that is non-standard. We need to be evaluated to see if we speak and write the standard variants. Many of us can identify the standard variant if written but a large percentage of Nigerians cannot speak or write standard English (myself included)

Perhaps you’re right but you should also be aware that what Americans consider as ‘standard English’ is substandard to the Britons.

If every Nigerian was sincere with themselves, they would know that IELTS is very necessary for every Nigerian to take

We must all take IELTS, because if you interact with Nigerians regularly, you would know that most of us well and truly have no proper comprehension of English

IELTS must continue, please. Nigerians are not proficient in English. A country where its graduates are still speaking "Thank God I passed away from the NYSC ..." think they should not write IELTS?

Please, let us try to be honest this year.

It is very simple. Nigeria should also mandate every British citizen to write one of our dialect before granting visa. Why are we crying over nothing.
Re: Stop Asking Nigerians To Write IELTS (Petition) by TheGift: 2:42pm On Jan 26, 2022
This is long overdue.

I am glad the petitioners gave options to allow room for negotiation.

Left to me option 3 should only arise if they have been able to justify why it should not be scrapped- at least for Nigerians who really don’t need to be proving such.

The idea of having to write a language proficiency test one passed two years prior, for a language one has been using for long before , (then 2 years after the test) is totally absurd.

This British colonial masters need to rethink this whole money spinning and clearly exploitative strategy.

Oga, stop mixing issues up.

IELTS began in 1980 (Over 40 years now) even before Buhari’s first coming as a military ruler.

IELTS is operative in over 20 African countries , not only Nigeria.

Because you have issues with Buhari does not mean you must drag Him into every issue. It doesn’t make you look smart.

hmm, urgh, okay, objectivity. I would hope, they reduced the cost of writing the test and made it accessible in any state in the country.

There should be consideration for those who are not in the capital or Lagos state, they should have access to such a center in their states.

Just to add that indeed your objectivity is in doubt for I see no reason why after someone did not understand the word "viable", you decided to add it to your list of "reasons". And also hearing/reading a sentence and misunderstanding it is a worldwide thing that can occur while hearing/reading in any language.

Furthermore, those countries you hyped are also not on the list. So in regards to the topic, it's a wonder why you bothered to hype their English.

I suspect it is a deliberate policy to hinder Nigerian in particular from migrating. They are aware that Nigerian are very determined in pursuing success and can compete anywhere with any nationale.
