Have you ever wondered why the highly sought English Proficiency Test (IELTS) so expensive as against other foreign language tests? Why e dey rise everyday like garri wen dem pour water?

I know that the demand is high, as its a major requisite by educational institutions abroad, either for work or study. But as compared to the French Proficiency test taken by francophone countries for the same purposes, it is way too expensive.

How can one undergo all his studies in English Language ( from primary to tertiary) and would still have to write a test that its result expires every two years? Do we tend to forget the skills of English learnt after the two years(even if there is basis for the test) or what?

Those at the helm of affairs in the educational sector should please take this on and treat as urgent, even the poor wan comot for this country too. We dey beg!

Why?

Imagine this. The government spends billions subsidizing education for you all, free primary school, free secondary school, cheap universities(compared to other countries) in the hope that when you graduate, you will advance the country but you want to travel out (japa) with all the financial commitments the government have done for you and you still expect this same government to make it easy for you to travel out?

Imagine you spend money sending a woman/man to school thinking when done two of you can marry and be happy but alas, the person falls in love with someone else and says you are below his/her standard but still expects you to foot the wedding bill.

Or you as MD spends money training staff and the staff decides to just up and leave yet expects you to pay for transportation to the new firm.

The Nigerian government owes you nothing in this IELTS fight.

I doubt if UK will ever remove ielts for Nigerians hoping to relocate to the country. They make mad money from it, so e go hard.
One thing I've discovered in all my travels to the UK is that the number of people with foreign passport at the UK border at Heathrow is more than 40x the people with UK passport. But wen I return to Lagos Airport, the number of Nigerian passport is 80x the number of people with foreign passports(most are even Nigerians with foreign citizenship)

That shows that while foreiners are running to the UK, only few foreigners enter Nigeria

SECONDED,
because English is the primary medium of instruction in Nigeria at all levels of education,
We don't need IELTS at all.

Most or if not all Caribbean countries do not take the English test so why should African colonies do?

We are still signing the petition as we type.
More signatures needed from sane, honest and hardworking Nigerians.

BUT on the other hand, (cont from above)
Looking at things from the other perspective (Typical Of Dem MANNA, that do not go jorojarajoro on an issue, May Baba 70 soul continue to Rest in PerfectPeace. )

The English spoken and written by Nigerians,
in recent times, is terrible and getting WORSE.
We look at the writing and comments from Heads of Schools, even private schools in Nigeria and we are shocked and dismayed.
You see things like "why did you CRIED",
when did you BOUGHT it", the past and present tenses never agree.
The same time spent watching BBNaija should be spent learning the Use of English!

Is that also why it expires every two years? Nigerians can defend anything to their own detriment. Lol
You just chose to ignored the comment above abi and chose to comment on the one that suit your narrative?

Nigerians love to just massage their ego sha.

Bikiaful and go and sign your petition now.

airsaylongcome:

Starting a sentence with "Because" already provides enough reason why you should be writing IELTS

WoundedLamb:

Starting a sentence with the word "because" is acceptable provided the initial clause is followed by another independent clause that completes the sentence (separated by a comma). The guy's construct is correct. If anything, it shows he's got a good command of the language.

"Because English is the primary medium of instruction in Nigeria at all levels of education, we don't need IELTS at all."

In the above sentence, the initial clause "because English is the primary medium of instruction in Nigeria at all levels of education" is followed by the independent clause "we don't need IELTS at all". He also did not forget the comma. This makes a complete sentence. The same sentence can be written as "we don't need IELTS at all because English is the primary medium of instruction in Nigeria at all levels of education".

"Because" is a subordinate conjunction and, therefore, makes the clause appears in dependent (unable to stand on its own as a sentence). Kids and learners of the language sometimes forget to add the independent clause after the dependent one introduced by the conjuction. This is why teachers tell them never to begin a sentence with the word. This way, they can ensure the independent clause always comes first.

All I see is exploitation by these foreign agencies and their governments. Even if this test must continue, it should be affordable and validity period extended to 5 - 10 years. These guys are ripping us because they know many people want to leave this country. It’s not fair at all.

When people still want to make it to Canada

It’s normal for business, even if the fees is increased to $10,000, people will still pay.

This dudes know what’s playing and taking advantage of the situation.

Imagine the ambassador of the high commission was a Nigerian, he would have increased to 1 million dollars knowing people are hell bent on taking the exam.

Because England has always been the worst slave masters. And don't forget that English or French was given to their so called former colonies to enslave the people. So, we're now paying cash to speak English.

Wait a minute! It actually cost us Billions of dollars to speak English or any other foreign language in Africa!!

Imagine how much dollar we could earn in Africa, simply by promoting our own native languages to the world. Plus how much we could save, simply by acquiring knowledge in our native languages instead of being slaves to someone else language.

White people have made us not just stupid but mad. And I am not being rhetorical. We have to be officially mad to adopt someone else language as ours. Now, we also have to pay to speak it.

Re: IELTS: English Proficiency Test Cost As Against The French Proficiency Test Cost by Nobody: 10:55pm On Jan 26, 2022
You people should stop this rubbish. How dear you compare education in France to that of the UK? UK is far better. How many go to France to school?

Our English in Naija is different from UK and US English. Let us be serious here.

Also, your currency is the wahala. This is the same amount all other non speaking English countries pay. You are subjected to it cos many of you cannot speak good English. And your accent is bad. Go and watch Nollywood and listen to how they yell like people from another world. Common "TH", you cannot pronounce well. No one is saying you should form fake Amerikana accent, but pronounce clearly.

Una wan japa, you dey call govt to fight this for you. Una no serious. I dont understand how people dont use their brains to know the right cause to fight. The same exam has been there for a long time. Even Ahmadu Bello, Obafemi Awolowo and other did the test in 1940s. Did they complain of the money to write it? TOEFL is for the US.

Go face the economy of your nation. Get us good leaders. Vote wisely. Let us make naija better. It's your currency killing you and not IELTS. This is to show you that Naija is dead.
