Nwayiocha, a Swiss woman married to a Nigerian man is trending online for the past few days. She became a general topic after a random nomination for her to be appointed the commissioner for culture and tourism in a state in the eastern part of Nigeria called Anambra. She is married to an Anambra man and Anambra state is largely populated by indigenous Igbo people. The name nwayiocha means fair lady in the Igbo language.


Nwayiocha is a vlog blogger on Facebook who has wholeheartedly embraced the culture and tradition of the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. She has not only learned how to speak the Igbo language, but she can also cook Igbo delicacies and all her children are fluent in the native language. She loves everything Igbo and always visits her husband’s village to spend time with the family. According to her, that will make her children familiar with their origin and it makes her more integrated into the culture she was married to. In her words, “we try to make it home every Christmas. It is my second home, and my heart is full of joy whenever my feet touch Ala Igbo”

Why do most Nigerians accord more respect, acceptance and opportunities to foreigners than what we give our fellow Nigerians from other ethnic groups? An Edo woman won't oppose her son marrying an "oyinbo" woman but will rain fire and brimstone if that same son marries an Esan woman from the same Edo state. Igbos want to appoint an oyinbo woman as commissioner but will never nominate a yoruba, hausa or other ethnic person, who was born and lived all his life in igbo Land, even as ordinary special adviser or councillor of the smallest unit. We just keep keep discriminating among ourselves and unfortunately, bad leadership and religion are not helping matters.

Many Nigerian born people hold political positions all over the world, so u see no reason why she can't do the same here in nigeria...

I follow her on Facebook and I know how much she loves, embraces and appreciates the Igbo culture.

That is the reason states like Katsina and kano would employ foreign doctors and be paying then in dollar rate. And doctors from South especially Christians would be employed as contract staff.

She sits across the bridge, on one hand a westerner, on the other hand loves, married , practices, understands and projects the culture, a position no other person can easily fit.
