What u guys don't understand is the fact that there is high level of unemployment and the northern with large population of less educated young people and less opportunities is the most affected. most of them see this kind of job as the only opportunity to the top plus they like to rule over others and the job gives them that mini opportunity. Also the major religion up north have little value to life so even if work is risk, they don't mind . An average norther youth want to be in the armed forces, they do since it does not require much of educational qualifications to archive in Nigeria. The southerns see the job right now as an opportunity to die, only the very few who may be very frustrated takes it as the last option.

When the comes to job opportunities, the northerners are very lucky because they're honest, they want to see their fellow brothers succeed. Nice one!

It is because of how they have conducted the recruitment exercise in the past, that is why other regions have lost interest in force work in Nigeria. They pick the much they can from the North before selecting a few from other regions. I have an uncle who served in the army in the 80s. He left the army because Northerners get promoted even without merit while soldiers from other regions barely get considered for promotion. This is exactly what we are seeing in federal appointments.

I decided to take notice after reading that comment, and to my surprise, that nairalander was right.

This comment made me laugh. Thanks for bringing our attention to the fact that ICT tools are hardly found in police stations.

There was a certain police doctor from my town. Even though he wasn’t the typical olopa you’d see at checkpoints, he was still paranoid about his involvement with the NPF. Not a lot of people knew he was a police man and this was more than 20 years.

In the next 10-20 years from now, we’d be wondering why northerners are the majority in the police force.

To join no be by force, nwannem. This is the distribution of the people who WILLINGLY applied.

I think it shows all too clearly how poverty and desperation is distributed in the country, because in the south, that's what usually makes people join the police as recruits.

It shows us that there are 5 times more poor and semi-literate people in the North than in the south.

Like I said, a lot of so-called "Northerners" are culturally Southerners. Just politically zoned to the North.

There are Yoruba-speaking people in Kogi State and Ibo-speaking people in Benue, yet they are "Northerners".

But is it really a case of pride, or merely a matter of having better opportunities? There's nothing wrong with "pride" if it means preferring to look for a private sector job where you can put your skills to use, instead of becoming a public-sector parasite whose chief task for the next 30 years will be to shake down innocent civilians for bribes you can kick up to your superiors. Even selling gala by the roadside has more dignity and ethical merit to it than becoming an armed-robber in uniform.
