Yes we were formally/ originally from imo state. Then under Okigwe before they carved Abia state and we were moved to Abia.

It's the one they prepare in Lagos they use potash. In my village, they use akparata to make abacha sauce and it tastes better and purer than this Lagos potash version that will almost be tasting like soap.

Mun.zy14, can you help with information or maybe referrals? I read it is common to those in Umuahia. I also read in several places that it is taken from what is taken from "mature" shoots of what is referred to as edible elephant grass which I am certain is not the typical elephant grass I grew up knowing off out in Ikorodu, and here I now live.

So if you can please help locate pictures of the actual plant the shoots -achara shoots - are harvested from, that would be very much appreciated.

It is still the matured elephant grass...you harvest inner part of the shoot which is very soft and tender for consumption.

It's not. Do you know of anyone in the East who can maybe get us pictures of the plant so I can investigate using that instead. Elephant grass is also common here and it isn't Achara or people here would have achara soup regularly on their tables.

Even back when I was young, though elephant grass was everywhere to be found growing up in Ikorodu, nor once did I ever see anyone harvesting it to go eat at home.

It is elephant grass...But, there is a way those village mommies do harvest it like a pro.
They don't use knife sef, just bare hands..
The person I know, is my ex babe...She is no way a pro when it comes to these things..She doesn't like the native soup as well..
You have to travel to Abia state, If you truely want it or making a research on it...Just enter Umuahia, you will get it clean clear.

Popular Elephant grass which is popularly consumed by goats, rams and even rabbits does not have the Achara stem that is used in making of Achara soup. This I am sure of so I really do need to get an image of the plant showing the stem itself and maybe the whole, so I can run it through plant database to learn it's true name..
