could you please educate us on what kind of fabric, wood and foam is considered inferior, basic or premium..... thank you

Carcass

Demand for quality wider wood and not the usual 2inches wide they use for display furnitures.( Not the one that will disgrace the owner)

Demand for use of plywood for covering not the usual carton in most cases.

Quality foam (unlike the average ones)

Low density foam
High density foam
Combination of foam and fibre

Fabric or leather.

The fabrics and leather are function of cost.

Average fabrics are used for display furnitures for quick sales

Good Uphostery to finish work

Dear Forum, speaking of wood, what kind of wood in Nigeria is naturally antirot and anti termite?

I want to do some woodwork that will be exposed to the elements but will not have contact with the ground, but with concrete.

I also want in the absence of pressure treated wood, something that can last say 5 years before I have to do renovation and repair works.

The woodwork will be treated and painted by me.

Thanks in advance.

you can demand professionalism and it's your right. Be ready to pay for it too.

If you see a chair that costs $10,000 and want to replicate it in Nigeria, kindly be willing to pay at least $7,000.

In a working country, there are vocational training schools where you learn all kinds of skills but it's not working in Nigeria. How do you want them to grow without relearning skills as they come. It's not long when our Nigeria engineers stopped using two pillars at the front of a building. No car lives after five years of being maintained by a Nigerian mechanic. If you ask them, they will tell you that Okoro imported inferior parts.

I have been seeing designs on Pinterest and I don't even know how they made it. If you bring such to me, I will tell you that I can't make it.

If anyone here can bring a functional vocational training center in this world, I will gladly attend and I know many artisans will. The lack of such training is the reason people always say "oga that's how we do it". That's because outside of that,he has no other idea as to how to get it done.

I thank God for this thread, I have learnt so much about my work and how to do better than I learnt under my boss. Due the type of people I meet here, I have improved my job tremendously but I still know that the journey isn't even started yet. Hopefully, I will keep learning

wow that's all you can make out of it?

Here are some of my works which I did for people here.

I believe in a solution based criticism. If you have a solution to make Nigeria artisans better, I'm all ears. Anything short of that......

My parting shot

"If you are not ready and willing to do more than what you have been paid for, you can never be paid more than what you are doing."
-Bob Proctor-

It's when you do more than what you were paid for that people be willing to pay you more than what you are doing.

this is a trickish comment, some big men on this section are using some cleaver words to trick some less educated here into doing more. Even the bible says "he who gives to the rich will become poor". If u want more pay for it. Stop treating everyone like they are your bricklayers who should work first before collection of payment, making them seem like they are at your Mercy.

The quote you are responding to is meant for those that truly desire greatness in what they do.

As for me, I don't know how to underpay as long as its for value. Those that has worked with me on this thread knows I don't underpay, but I must get value for the money I paid.

If you feel you can't do a good job with what a customer offers you, politely decline, heaven won't fall, but when you don't respect tomorrow, you take it and mess things up.

If you have a destination, then you will start treating everything with respect.

Lastly, I'm not a rich man, if I don't work, I also don't eat, that some of us are posting here doesn't mean we have arrived or pick money on the floor.

Then it must be sold by speciality shops and not the normal timber market I assume.

I want to build the usual American picket fence but it will seat on a concrete foundation.

Good morning friends.

I seek your counsel for the electrical issue we have. The house wiring is 3-phase but we use a single-phase meter.

A couple of months ago, there was a 4- day blackout on our estate because of a major fault. To our shock, two of the outside lights/ bulbs continued to shine and gradually waned till they went off after two days. One is on the gatehouse and the other on the house.

We have been wondering what the issue is.

Then, last week, we found that a ceiling light in the kitchen wouldn't go off when the switch was turned off. It would either start blinking or stay lit. About 15minutes later, it would go off on its own.

Please advise on what the cause of the malfunction could be and what should be done.

Thank you for your response.

You are very correct with the observation but the problem is that most furniture maker are lazy this days some are not good to work with natural wood.
What most of them do now is “ cut and fix “ work materials “ mdf and HDF board.
My 50yrs plus old furniture man told me 3 days ago the hardship they face now to get more Labour to do real wood work, this bring the high cost on any real wood work like doors, kitchen cabinets etc

It has to do with age truly. A 60 year old man singlehandedly did wardrobe of 4 rooms and 4 kitchen cabinets using plywood and some woods for me 3 years ago.

that's for your kind sir but I ve been on this forum for years and in my experience nairalanders are bad for business, unless you want to spoil your reputation. Thanks to Jiji some of us won't have become anything in life. They want the best, they know the website to extract the best stock photos on earth but when it's negotiation time the combine like 50 artisans and start hit their heads together then play on the weak side of the hungry ones and then come back here to say that they don't get value for their money.

Alot of proffessionals here can relate to what I'm saying. That's why you rarely see some advertising here anymore, unless the newbies.

Who are these people you're talking about?

You should not be afraid to name names as we also talk about artisans delivering below par jobs, we should also talk about clients cheating or underpaying artisans.

Here or jiji, a bad client /artisan remains bad. Just that you can't complain about these people on jiji, so some of them rather run there where they can get away with fraud/mediocrity.

One thing though, except an artisan was forced to take the job, the decision not to be underpaid is in his or her to take.

It could be the light switch. The problem only recently developed right? Try change of the light switch and see. If the problem persist, you may need to rewire and EARTH the property properly.

I am not an electrician. Not even close.

Thank you for this response. Since one switch controls all of the exterior lights on the house and another, all the lights on the gatehouse, we couldn't understand why single bulbs misbehaved out of many.

We will look to having the house earthed properly.

Thank you again.

Mr. Man, would you just STFU? angry

A Swede once claimed, 50% of Nigerians would fail a mental capacity test to qualify as normal in the Western world.

STOP confusing Quality and Premium

Under no circumstance should quality EVER be compromised or people be made to pay extra for quality delivery.

Quality should be the basic hallmark of every business and corporation while Premium should be for those willing to pay more for extra functionality of the delivery.

The fact that Ferrari, Lamborghini or Mercedes are luxuries doesn't make Toyota or Honda anything short of quality.

Just imagine, you're here justifying stupidity yet, it's animals like you that blame 9ja Politicians for ineptitude while they're just a reflection of ur madness.

In Nigeria, the riff-raff, useless Artisans that failed the mastery of their crafts due to laziness and ignorance would require customers to pay extra for quality services.
