Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno, Friday, disbursed N100 million business capital to 152 youths, who renounced thuggery.

Mr Zulum during the disbursement exercise in Maiduguri, said the gesture was to assist the youths engage in productive activities and contribute to the state’s development.

He said that 16 of the beneficiaries, who completed one-month entrepreneurship training, would receive N2 million each as seed capital while 136 others would get 500,000 each.

According to him, the beneficiaries are expected to repay 50 per cent of the money given to them in three years.

The governor also announced scholarship award to one child from each of the beneficiaries family, adding that the state government would sponsored their education.

“You engaged in thuggery for many years but have nothing to show, with what we are giving you if you have good intention and the will to change, you’ll change for the better,” he said.

In his remarks, Saina Buba, Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Empowerment, said the beneficiaries had been supported under a special programme tagged: “Super Youth Entrepreneurship Training.

“It is the first time in the state that many of the youths who engaged in thuggery since 1999 would be trained and get support. We hope it will go a long way in addressing thuggery in the state,” he said.

The repentant thugs were trained in animal fattening, fisheries, poultry, entrepreneurial skills and e-business, according to Mustapha Mohammed, Director of Entrepreneurship, Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri.

Hope the recipients are able to put the funds to productive use,and being able to repay the state after 3 years!

This effort by the governor is commendable and should be extended to graduates in the state and not just to ex-thug least you pass the wrong message of thuggery being profitable.

This could be imitated by the federal government by establishing modern and world class entrepreneurship centres across the 36 states of the federation so that students who immediately are done with NYSC are sent there to acquire various skills and a loan of 5million to set up business given to each, repayable after 3 years.

Good gesture but Buhari has made naira become useless. After they share it, since most of them are even used to thuggery life, the money will be spent in a short time.

Verdict is that they will still return to thuggery. My advice is that they get properly monitored after receiving the money.

Nigeria...very useless country where thieves, rogues, bandits, militants, and terrorists are given Amnesty and rewarded so that they dont do crime while the citizens that are oppressed by these elements are left to wallow in poverty.

That Governor is working but I don't support Giving of Money to repentant terrorist. The money will make the adventure more lucrative and a typical Alamaijeri will still follow same part expecting Mobilization later.

Renounced thugs, repentant terrorists.

Complete waste of resources and impediment to justice.

Either the government is very dumb as is the case with the fg or there is an ulterior motive.

Lol. And people are clamouring for this person to be president or vice. When you incentivise crime, you don't discourage it. Nay, you show people that if they are bad enough, sooner or later, they just might get a huge pay check from the government. Actions like this do not result in a lasting solution to thuggery. Rather it increases it.
What happened to rounding this criminals up and letting them face the law?
What happens to making sure the police and other security agencies work effectively to discourage crime and thuggery?
Nations that have advanced have never had it in their history books that criminals were paid off. Why have we decided to take this path that'll only lead to self destruct?
I just tire for this country.

Then again to think that after enduring Buhari's government for 8 years, there's no relief in site, because a large number of the population are clamouring for Tinubu, someone who is an integral part of the present regime to take over!!! And to do what I ask? Tinubu isn't going to change anything. He is just going to continue from where Buhari stopped. Which from the look of things only spells disaster.

Finally, if you are a Nigerian of whatever tribe and ethnicity. And you have ever complained about the present government. And all of a sudden thinks Tinubu, who is practically the present government is the best man for Nigeria. Then you're the biggest Hypocritical bigot, and frankly Nigeria could do without you.
