Such is it about divine grace and mercy.

Honestly, it's really not about how much but how well.

Lol. The guy is just lucky and he's feeling entitled. Another employer might see you as an ungrateful SOB

Try this BS with naija employers you go regret say you go school. Dey there dey wine yourself. You're just lucky and privileged. Don't advice others to join your foolish bandwagon.

He is not lucky. When I wanted a job with one of Nigeria's biggest employers, I negotiated. In fact, I asked for an apartment plus a pay not given to my colleagues. They said they had never given apartments, except to a few of their expatriates. I told them if they wanted me to work with them they'd do what I asked. They succumbed.

Recently they still added another N1.26m (apart from bonuses) to the previous salary and that's when they found out I wanted to leave the country. Some employers are willing to pay thr money if you know the job.

I also have a friend who negotiated two days out of his salary, plus additional 3m to his yearly salary (apart from bonuses).

Confidence and ability matter a lot. If you know they job and confident about it, it works big time.

he surely have skills than most of his class mates and that give him privilege above most of them

so the company see the potentials in you and not certificate. you can't compare the same with Nigeria system, most of graduates even the second class upper don't have skills and what to offer than LA cram LA pour them do in school

how many elect elect graduates can even handle a community transformer? how many computer scientist can state the basic problem of computer and its components? how many accountant can analyse a small org tax or auditing? but they we all be saying work no dey Nigeria

everyone should go and upgrade and build themselves to become an employer until then work will continue to be scarce in Nigeria

Congrats to him and the advise is valid.

However when negotiating your salary, do it from a position of strength.

What I mean is this, it will pay you if you have a job already or when you think, you have another better offer.

He mentioned the job was a Product Manager job, that's a tech job, meaning it's skilled.
He mastered the skillset, packaged his CV and presented himself well.

It needs to be stated so someone doesn't think a bad result is equals to a good offer.

I'm not sure it's contract based.

The only logical explanation is that he has developed and mastered some skill sets to the extent that Oracle is willing to part with such large sums in order to clinch him.

Don't take stories like this at face value, there are many layers involved. wink
you are there my brother,so many skills involved

Wisdom is profitable to direct.

You have to contextualise everything.

*********
Is it a role in a saturated field?

Will you easily get much higher than you have been offered in a reasonably short period?

Can the organization afford to pay what you're asking?

Are there other motivational factors for joining the organization or taking up the role beyond the pay?
****
Those are some things to consider.

Only if you know your worth

Not just that. He has a sound internship and good background. Companies want hands-on employees, those that will hit the ground running.

It was that confidence that made him asked for more. Most Nigerians do not even understand the significance of internships.

His colleagues maybe building companies of their own and employing people,he is celebrating negotiating a high salary from his employer.
There is no single moral in this story.
If he had said he graduated bottom of his class but is now employing people that graduated with better grades than him,or that he now owns his own business making several thousands or even millions while his colleagues are still working 9-5 under employers,it would have made more sense.

What are u saying? If everyone is an employer who'll be the employee?. He knows what he's saying cs graduates abroad with good certs and all that have an average salary of 100k dolls(with years of work experience oo), entry level salary is about 50k-80k(average).
Imagine someone with that poor cgpa getting 250k right out of college oo. Something that'll take others at least 5+ yrs of experience. I understand your point quite alryt but what he's saying is that you shouldn't give up,and don't settle for less(always negotiate).

His position of strength comes from his internship. People are emphasizing his poor grade but not his background and the fact that he will hit the ground running, unlikely fresh graduate without an internship.

Your grade is part of salary determining factors, not the only factor.

That means he gets around $20k per month, quite rare and nice

More like $10k per month removing tax, insurance and other bills, it could be less.

Some people will not dare this in naija, the competition is high and lots of people with even higher qualifications are on the line and ready to accept even a lower offer.

However, this is my kind of thing. I tell yhu what I want and I let yhu decide on taking me or get lost grin grin grin

That's what happens when yhu know yhur worth.

No, the competition is only high at the base. Those with higher qualifications but taking low pay offers are people with just paper certificates nothing else to offer.

This guy has a strong background with a good internship. Meaning, he is hands-on.

cool

Inspiring....

It's only in Nigeria that, UX/UI front end design, plus Web development , branding, business content writting , IT guy would charge small fee of 200k and the company would price you down to 30k and still expect you to do proper presentation

The same software development job he is getting ₦120million per annum for Whogohost and other Lagos ICT firm won't pay more than 100k per month

.

There is what is obtainable in the industry and there is also what is obtainable in the country.

You will notice this in every country you try to work in. No one pays you American standard salary in a Nigerian economy. There is always some wide variations. All economies are not the same.

You need to know your environment and be realistic.

That's why I tell people to connect with HR people on LinkedIn and call them for advice when negotiations start.

They will surely assist. Then also skill up and re-negotiate every six months if you feel like.

The koko is know the worth.

That's a country where business is real. Competition takes place and businesses are looking for innovation and cutting edge to get ahead. My experience with interviews in developed countries is that no one actually asks for your qualifications initially. They read your cover letter and CV ( no doubt low grade won't be a very good advert, but graduating from an Ivy league institution is) and invite you for an interview if they consider you a good fit. You're hired purely on your performance at the interview. Your certificates are needed for documentation after you've secured the job. .

In Nigeria, in contrast, businesses are not necessarily competing on equal keel. They need you to just do routine jobs requiring no special skills or innovation. Most businesses here thrive on government patronage rather than innovation and are more inclined to employing people that have connections in government, which is why you have terms like Politically Exposed Persons'...The richest person in Nigeria deals on pedestrian goods like sugar, flour, cement etc..Richest men elsewhere are innovators like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Bill Gates etc..I'm not aware of any innovative product that came out of Nigeria .

Great!

In this part of the world you take whatever they offer you or you go back to your mama………. negotiation is not in our dictionary here.

Only those who have job can negotiate good package with another company.

This is a place where qualified 100k people are chasing 10 spots.
