The Soviet Union was once a big united nation stretching from Eastern Europe far into Asia.
At it's peak the Soviet Union was a reckoned force rivalled only by the USA.
The Soviet Union aligned with Communism on the other hand, the USA was a Capitalist Democracy.

An Ideological battle of influence ensued between the 2 groups which spilled over into the Cold War in 1947.
In 1949, USA and it's European allies decided to checkmate the growing communist influence of Soviet Union (their collective threat ) by establishing the N.A.T.O.

The Soviet Union was later broken up amicably by it's member states (including Russia and Ukraine) due to political infighting and economic stagnation.
The NATO alliance remained and Russia assumed the position of top threat.
Having the upper hand in geopolitics, Russia has maintained the self acclaimed position of political big brother to these former Soviet states including Ukraine.

Ukraine is resource rich (fossil fuels) yet politically/economically weak making it an asset which Russia is desperate to reabsorb into "Greater Russia ".
This has led to numerous spats between Russia and the modern Ukrainian state.
Russia has been accused on sponsoring secessionist groups and regions within Ukraine, inorder to exploit on divisive tactics and actualize Russian political interests in the region.

Recently, the current Ukrainian government, under rumoured motivation by the US, commenced consultations and plans towards joining the N.A.T.O alliance. Which if successfull, will bring Ukraine under direct co-operation with the US and all the perks that come along.
For Russia that will be a disaster too close to home akin to a brother dining with the perceived enemy.
It is also regarded as a power play by the US which Russia can't afford to tolerate.

Now, Russia is making a statement of power assertion with it's active plans to Invade Russia.
USA and it's allies can either respond indirectly, through economic sanctions of which Russia is developing an immunity for; or directly by participating in or supporting the Ukrainian Resistance.

I personally can't forecast a World War or even between two major world powers. Why ??

The world is too globalised for such scale of conflict. Our economies and markets are correlated. Cultures and People are now intertwined.
For context, today an african by race can qualify better as an american than a Caucasian.

What happens to one happens to all. Humans understand each other better, travel more, exchange more. A global war is just unlikely. A race war is more likely

Anyone or government that initiates such war risks economic annihilation and public disapproval both home and abroad.

Yeah I am..but you religious folks need to stop bringing your Religion to any little issue..
The Bible is just another paper book meant to cage and deceive gullible persons.. so nobody is taking that s**t serious..

All sane people will speak against this needless conflict driven by power-hungry politicians.
Ultimate, if there is a war, these leaders will be safe in their palaces while innocent people who had no hand in the events that started the war will be at the receiving end.
Let all parties exercise extreme caution.
