He accused the US and its allies of ignoring Russia's demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and offer Moscow security guarantees. He said the Russian military operation aims to ensure a demilitarisation of Ukraine. Putin said that all Ukrainian servicemen who lay down arms will be able to safely leave the zone of combat.

Updates: Investors regain risk appetite; dollar, oil pare gains after Ukraine invasion

Investors rediscovered much of their appetite for riskier bets by Thursday afternoon with the MSCI global index finishing well above its session low and the U.S. dollar paring gains while oil futures pulled back from multi-year records after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and responses from other countries. After falling sharply earlier in the day, U.S. Treasury yields pared most of their declines and Russia's rouble recouped much of its losses against the dollar while safe-haven gold was in the red after earlier rising as much as 3.5%. While the S&P had steadily regained lost ground after hitting its session low around the open, a noticeable improvement in risk appetite followed U.S. President Joe Biden's unveiling of new sanctions against Russia.

Updates: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that "all evidence suggests that Russia intends to encircle and threaten Kyiv", CNN has reported. "And we believe Moscow has developed plans to inflict widespread human rights abuses – and potentially worse – on the Ukrainian people... For months, Russia has engaged in the pretense of diplomacy while insisting that they had no intentions of invading Ukraine. All the while, the Kremlin has been preparing this cold-blooded attack, the scale of which has not been seen in Europe since the Second World War," Blinken added, according to CNN.

Airlines scrambled to adapt to conflict in Europe on Thursday as Ukraine closed its airspace, fuel prices soared and carriers were urged to "exercise caution" deep inside Russia hours after Moscow's military invaded Ukraine. Moldova, southwest of Ukraine, also halted flights, while Belarus to the north said civilian flights could no longer fly over part of its territory after Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised the dawn operation. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said Ukraine's skies and airspace in Russia and Belarus within 100 nautical miles of borders with Ukraine could pose risks. The aviation industry has taken heightened notice of the risks conflicts pose to civil aviation since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has signed a decree on the general mobilisation of the population in the wake of Russia's invasion, the Interfax Ukraine news agency said on Thursday. Citing a decree on the presidential website, the agency said the mobilisation would be carried out within 90 days of the decree coming into force.

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday said lawmakers want to provide Ukraine with $600 million for "lethal defense weapons" to battle Russia's unfolding attack. "What we're doing with Ukraine is making sure that we have humanitarian assistance to help the people; that we have lethal defense weapons going into Ukraine to the tune of $600 million for them to fight their own fight," she said, speaking to reporters in San Francisco.

Can the NATO action be prompt to save Ukraine, because that is all I care to know about. I like the sanctions coming from NATO and it allies. But Russia has to get a taste of what they have done to Ukraine.

The battle rages on... The Ukrainian military is reporting significant fighting northwest of the nation's capital as Russian forces apparently try to advance on Kyiv from the north. The military said Friday morning a bridge across a river had been destroyed in the area of Ivankiv, about 60 km (40 miles) northwest of Kyiv.
