Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday announced a military operation in Ukraine, claiming it's intended to protect civilians. In a televised address, Putin said the action comes in response to threats coming from Ukraine. He added that Russia doesn't have a goal to occupy Ukraine. Putin said the responsibility for bloodshed lies with the Ukrainian regime. Putin warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead to consequences they have never seen. He accused the US and its allies of ignoring Russia's demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and offer Moscow security guarantees. He said the Russian military operation aims to ensure a demilitarisation of Ukraine. Putin said that all Ukrainian servicemen who lay down arms will be able to safely leave the zone of combat. https://www.cnbctv18.com/world/russia-ukraine-war-live-updates-vladimir-putin-united-states-joe-biden-nato-moscow-kyiv-markets-oil-prices-bitcoin-12605732.htm#post2

rasheylaw:Updates: Investors regain risk appetite; dollar, oil pare gains after Ukraine invasion Investors rediscovered much of their appetite for riskier bets by Thursday afternoon with the MSCI global index finishing well above its session low and the U.S. dollar paring gains while oil futures pulled back from multi-year records after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and responses from other countries. After falling sharply earlier in the day, U.S. Treasury yields pared most of their declines and Russia's rouble recouped much of its losses against the dollar while safe-haven gold was in the red after earlier rising as much as 3.5%. While the S&P had steadily regained lost ground after hitting its session low around the open, a noticeable improvement in risk appetite followed U.S. President Joe Biden's unveiling of new sanctions against Russia.

Updates: Biden takes veiled swipe at China in condemning Russia backers on Ukraine U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday said any country that backed Russia's onslaught in Ukraine would be "stained by association," after China rejected calling Moscow's move an invasion and instead urged all sides to exercise restraint. Ukrainian forces battled Russian invaders on three sides after Moscow mounted an assault on Ukraine by land, sea and air in the biggest attack on a European state since World War Two. "Putin will be a pariah on the international stage. Any nation that countenances Russia's naked aggression against Ukraine will be stained by association," Biden said without naming China. Updates: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that "all evidence suggests that Russia intends to encircle and threaten Kyiv", CNN has reported. "And we believe Moscow has developed plans to inflict widespread human rights abuses – and potentially worse – on the Ukrainian people... For months, Russia has engaged in the pretense of diplomacy while insisting that they had no intentions of invading Ukraine. All the while, the Kremlin has been preparing this cold-blooded attack, the scale of which has not been seen in Europe since the Second World War," Blinken added, according to CNN.

Updates: Airlines scramble as Ukraine invasion redraws route map Airlines scrambled to adapt to conflict in Europe on Thursday as Ukraine closed its airspace, fuel prices soared and carriers were urged to "exercise caution" deep inside Russia hours after Moscow's military invaded Ukraine. Moldova, southwest of Ukraine, also halted flights, while Belarus to the north said civilian flights could no longer fly over part of its territory after Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised the dawn operation. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said Ukraine's skies and airspace in Russia and Belarus within 100 nautical miles of borders with Ukraine could pose risks. The aviation industry has taken heightened notice of the risks conflicts pose to civil aviation since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014.

Local news reports showed dozens of protesters in the U.S. capital waving Ukrainian flags and chanting "Stop Russian aggression!" In London, hundreds of demonstrators, many of them Ukrainian and some weeping, gathered outside Downing Street, home to the prime minister, urging Britain to do more.

Can the NATO action be prompt to save Ukraine, because that is all I care to know about. I like the sanctions coming from NATO and it allies. But Russia has to get a taste of what they have done to Ukraine. |
