The sole reason is the proximity of Kyiv to the Belarusian border. Has nothing to do with masterclass. In fact the Antonov airport meant to be used by Russian paratroopers to assault kyiv has been retaken.

According to the UK intelligence, over 450 spetsnaz were killed yesterday. But Moscow isn't reporting it. DW, Aljazeera, CNN has cameras on ground. Go watch them and see the amount of destroyed tanks Ukraine special forces were inspecting in Kharkiv. Meanwhile I haven't seen any Russia Today ground reports. All their reports are speeches from their Defence ministry. Why do you think we are hearing further russian reports in Kharkiv. The resistance there is something else. Every Russian soldier is a walking target. In Kiev almost all guns and snipers in stores are sold out.

South African Government calls for a peaceful resolution of the escalating conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine

The Republic of South Africa is dismayed at the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. We regret that the situation has deteriorated despite calls for diplomacy to prevail.

Armed conflict will no doubt result in human suffering and destruction, the effects of which will not only affect Ukraine but also reverberate across the world. No country is immune to the effects of this conflict. As the UN Secretary-General has indicated, the conflict will have a huge impact on the “global economy in a moment when we are emerging from the COVID pandemic and so many developing countries need to have space for the recovery”.

South Africa calls on Russia to immediately withdraw its forces from Ukraine in line with the United Nations Charter, which enjoins all member states to settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice are not endangered.

South Africa emphasises respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

As a nation birthed through negotiation, South Africa is always appreciative of the potential dialogue has in averting a crisis and de-escalating conflict. In line with our strong commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflict, South Africa urges all parties to devote increased efforts to diplomacy and to find a solution that will help avert further escalation.

The door of diplomacy should never be closed even as conflict has broken out. We also urge all parties to approach the situation in a spirit of compromise, with all sides respecting international law. In light of the escalating conflict, we call on all parties to resume diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the concerns raised expressed by Russia.

South Africa further calls on all parties to uphold and protect human rights and abide by their obligations in terms of international law and international humanitarian law.

South Africa continues to support and encourage regional initiatives such as the Minsk Agreements, and we welcome the work of the Normandy Format, the Trilateral Contact Group and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

South Africa calls on the UN Security Council to play its role in the search for peace. The Security Council remains the primary body tasked with the mandate to maintain international peace and security and it must exercise its responsibility fully in this regard. We also believe that the Good Offices of the UN Secretary-General could also make a positive contribution in finding a lasting solution to this conflict.

The South African Embassy in Kyiv is monitoring developments closely and is also assisting South African nationals in Ukraine.

THE RUSSIANS HAVE ARRIVED IN KIEV

The sound of gunfire has echoed through Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, as Russian tanks were filmed entering the city for the first time.

Ukraine's Ministry of Defence called on those living in Kyiv's northern outskirts - where the tanks were filmed - to make fire bombs "to neutralise the enemy".

Overnight, the city was hit by blasts, with at least one block of flats damaged and several civilians injured.

Russia has denied carrying out strikes.

The unnamed source at Russia's defence ministry also said a plane shot down over Kyiv was Ukrainian, Reuters news agency reports. Ukraine has said the jet was Russian.

As the second day of fighting began, Moscow - which is attacking from the east, north and south - appeared to have Kyiv firmly in its sights. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said "the enemy" was trying to put Kyiv "on its knees".


On Friday afternoon, Russia's defence ministry announced it had captured the Antonov airport, using 200 helicopters and a landing force in order to take the base to the north of Kyiv from Ukraine. Western intelligence officials warned earlier that Russia was building an "overwhelming force" to take control of the city.

Citizens in the northern Obolon district have been told to stay at home to avoid "active military operations" by city officials, Reuters adds. Obolon is the same area where it appeared tanks were filmed earlier in the day.

The Ministry of Defence had already appealed to the district's residents on its Facebook page to "inform us of troop movements, to make Molotov cocktails [firebombs] and neutralise the enemy".

The Nigerians should stop that really, most armies in the west at least the British don't do all that noise making in training ostensibly to induce morale. While training or marching without singing is mentally strenuous for soldiers it makes them tougher.

The Spetsnaz and their calm under intense fire reflects their training under duress without the noise. I've had a British soldier in private complain to me how hard to do that in training but you could see his finesse and so are the Russians. However elite Nigerian Speicial Forces like the SBS would not be loud under fire which would reflect their training as most elite units.

Or rather it means the civilians are really angry. The issue here is the fact that the Russian invasion is completely uncalled for and they have almost no support in Ukraine. Let's see how things unfold in Kyiv first. I must admit that the capital is in a very bad positon. They could have moved it to a city closer to poland. That way it would be extremely difficult to overrun.

Spetnaz is the general term for all special forces of Russia, including police, customs etc .. so he may and may not be referring to GRU.
However, I agree with you, the story is not plausible
Such a large element of soldiers, probably paratroopers, would have air support

It looks almost like the RU Army is seeking the path of least resistance. They advance but they can not target the UKR Army with maximum force because the UKR Army retreats to dense urban areas where they can deliver strongest resistance on contact.

Ukrainians are making plenty of defensive blunders. Look at this picture; the IFV is exposing its flank, which is the weakest part of the armour. Secondly, their positions are not fortified. This current position will be over runoff in a few minutes.

America is supplying more Javelins and Stingers, intelligence as we speak. They cant get directly involved because "WWIII". Russia knows this for sure.

I don't believe U.S has deployed "Combat" troops, maybe advisers, yes...
The U.S would not deploy Combat troops without providing air support. ISR and air support is vital to US ops... And if such assets are deployed, the Russian Airforce would have been at loggerheads with the F-16s.
Secondly, Russia has technically surrounded the country, through what means exactly will the US bring armament without alerting the Ivan's
The issue of supplying weapons to attack Russia is one of such reasons Putin claims to be attacking Ukraine, I don't see why they will add more fuel to this justification

Operators don't need air support on such missions, they don't even wear uniform for that matter. It is the kind of mission that is "off the records".

Why are they carrying Soviet and German weapons (instead of R4 and R5 rifles) and dressed up in some weird uniform instead of the regular SADF and SF uniform? its because the SA government wanted to look clean, like these were just mercenaries in case they were captured.

They get NO air support, they are on their own... this is how these things work

No air support and recon,
No Reasonable fighting vehicles,...
And fighting against an equally armed and trained military...
Even in Afghanistan, against less armed and technologically inferior enemies, the U S SOF wasn't foolish to not employ every advantage and back up they may need in case things went South.

They're not even behaving like professional military. To only think the Russians have only sent a portion of their army and the Ukrainians have crumbled.

To be fair, what Russia deployed is nothing amazing, if they had to use the same equipment on Sweden, they'd get their Russian asses whipped.

There should have been plenty of ambush points along the freeways, they were given plenty of Javelins and close to a thousand projectiles. Even if they were unlucky, they should have downed dozens of helicopters and took out dozens of tanks - it's all they needed to do.

Operators, especially US operators rely heavily on air defence assets to attack military positions.

A conflict with Sweden would be a different game entirely. They would employ more stand off munitions in that scenario.

This is the easy phase, which Ukraine was never going to win. Why expend all your munitions when there's an insurgency phase still to come?
