The conversation was about Russia using old equipments Tanks, IFVs in Ukrain so far, when we know they have upgraded and more advanced versions and in large quantities. So why aren't they using the new equipment which provide better protection, offensive capabilities?

if you enter street car race and you notice your opponent using their old car to race you when you are aware that they have a new more powerful modern car, it's logical to assume that they think they can defeat you using their old car and they are saving up the new car for a stronger opponent or the finals..

It's also testament to how Ukraine's air force and artillery are not a factor that this lumbering column has not been obliterated.

I must admit, this is a war blunder. These Russian generals lining up their troops like they are going to a field exercise needs to be rounded up and face a military court martial.
Even in the era without drones, this convoy can be easily ambushed. Reminds me of the Nigerian civil war. When the Biafran army ambushed over 100 Nigerian army vehicles at Abagana. Reports claim nearly 5,000 Nigerian soldiers under (then) Colonel Murtala Mohammed of the Second Division, Nigerian Army lost their lives.
The vehicles were said to be lined up this way. British reporters before the convoy took of said, "Africa most powerful weapons approaching the heart of Biafra and they Biafrans have no way to stop it". A single short from the rebels explosive hit a fuel tanker and burnt the entire convoy.
My point is, I hope the Russians stop this cowardice. This is a sitting duck for even mortar bombardments! I don't know why they Russians can't make the entire Ukrainian internet blank and disconnected. They are letting troop movement to be exposed. You don't let troop movements to be known to the enemy, that's a recipe for failure.
This war, the way Russians are being captured, makes the Russians look mediocre compared to the Americans. I hope the Russians are only deliberately being soft.

Some reports say Russians soldiers were told they were going to liberate Ukraine from Nazis and they were also told they would be welcomed as liberators in Ukraine.

If this is true, then I'm sure they're totally surprised when they get fired at by Ukrainian forces

I am no military expert here but I believe their approach would be different if they were fighting a NATO country.

The initial plan relied too heavily on a Ukrainian military that would be recalcitrant to fight and mostly flee before the “mighty” Russian army, hence the reason for using lightly armoured units, sometimes even reconnaissance units to attempt to occupy large cities, heck a riot police squad ‘omon’ of about 80 troops attempted to march on Kiev.
They only deployed about 30 to 35 percent of their initial troop build up on the border in the initial 3 days of the war and also mostly 70’s and 80’s era equipment used by the backwater eastern military districts

The vast majority of their capabilities have not been brought to bear, but that being said the greatest operational failure of the Russians was their failure to achieve air superiority within the first 72 hours of the war, the fact that TB-2 drones were still operational until about yesterday is unacceptable.

this will be controversial but IMO as in MY Opinion South African tactics have always been superior than that of the Soviet Union, as was seen during the border war..... Even today the SANDFs problems thankfully aren't due doctrine(Suadi Arabia springs to mind) but simply due to funding and salary vs capital expenditure ratio....our tactics have always revolved around high mobility with minimum logistic and Air cover... Hence why even without air cover our boys have done outstanding in the DRC, CAR and now in Moz
