The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, passed the Bill granting full autonomy to the local government and council areas in Nigeria.

Ninety-Two members of the red chambers voted overwhelmingly in support of the Bill, after a clause-by-clause consideration at the Committee on the Whole.

This is a great leap and one rare achievement from our legislators. It is a rescue bill that would free the people from the emperor that called themselves governors who have done nothing but to hijack allocation of local government and rendered them useless as the third tiers of government

In most countries Council or Borough are the closest to the people, but here in Nigeria most of our LGA Chairmen are living in Lekki, Ajah, Magodo, Abuja.....
Hope election will be free and fair....

In Bayelsa state, it can be as worse as the LG Chairman staying in Port Harcourt, River state and comes to Bayelsa every last days of the month to pay salaries to ghost and absentee workers like him then return to PH.

Next month, the cycle repeats.

The Governors will end up rejecting it. Especially as elections are close

Bayelsa is the biggest disaster in Nigeria. Small State, Huge Resources/Allocation = Zero Development!

Go to the North, South, you can hardly see any physical buildings, most of them don't stay even a week in the area.....Most LGA/LCDA in Lagos are eyes sores.....

My brother every state has their woes. The fact is we need more laws to ensure accountability and delivery on the job.

At first I was upset with these amendments but now I can see the benefit. It makes alot of sense

Come is like this rubber stamp senate is the best since the return of democracy, they have passed critical bills. Saraki led senate was indeed working against Nigerians

So how will granting them full autonomy address this problem? undecided I do not have anything against them being autonomous but if it means that the citizens won't get value,to what extent then will the autonomy benefit the citizens?

I think this autonomy must be tied with some minimum obligations and efcc should have an operational office in all the 774 LGAs to provide regular updates on their utilization of the funds.

That's why it must be about stakeholders. If certain conditions like minimum of 10 years residency, business ownership ,land or property ownership etc .are put in place, we won't have those that don't have stakes in the community vying for elective post. LG is the simplest way for the grassroots to access governance

The autonomy should be about the LG or FG organising the election not state. Godfatherism common in political parties would be curtail if independent candidates are allowed to contest too

LGAs don't deserve full autonomy because most of its chairmen lack common sense. You hardly see an LGA chairman who lives in the area they chair. It's just like a governor living in another state. Now, that begs the question: what's the essence of having an LGA chairman?

Re: Senate Passes LG Autonomy Bill by LeoDeKing: 3:13pm On Mar 01, 2022
There's nothing like local govt autonomy in Nigeria.

State govs are emperors.

They wield a lot of powers and arrogate even more powers to themselves.

To start with, LGA Chairmen are handpicked by state govs. Las las, they end up employees of the govs. Forget paper, it can't work. undecided
Re: Senate Passes LG Autonomy Bill by IfnobeGod20(m): 3:13pm On Mar 01, 2022
That's a good news, the veil is opened and the chain is broken from the strangulation of the state governments. The governors just crippled the local government administration for their selfish reason.
Re: Senate Passes LG Autonomy Bill by Gabe427: 3:13pm On Mar 01, 2022
No 70 years olds would want to be LG chairmen again
Re: Senate Passes LG Autonomy Bill by irepnaija4eva(m): 3:13pm On Mar 01, 2022
Good..

They should please consider

Federal police.. Charge to interfere in cases of boader terrorism, advance issue where the state police lacks expertise in handling..

State police... Charge for security within the state.

Local Government security.. Task to bring security to the grassroots..

With the above categories, I'm sure they will go a long way to curtail security laspes in the country.

The governors will never agree.
