I hope African countries see how the US and Europe are using their economic monopoly as a financial weapon.

It can and will be used against Africa unless an alternative to SWIFT and the dollar is found. Most reserves should be in China currency

Nigeria is wise to get arms from both the west and east. If either side to withhold spares or support the military will still have functioning systems unlike S.Africa which is dependant on the west

how are we anymore dependent on foreign suppliers than any other country? In fact we are by far the most self-sufficient force on the continent

There's NOTHING we (ZA) get from Russia besides the fact that the ANC MK generals were trained by the Soviets. Even if we voted against Russia now, it was not going to cost us anything, even economically.

So yes, it boils down to my point
Your point was generalized about countries (plural) who abstained, and I refuted it with data. Accept that fact and then limit your argument to SA.

Now, about SA, you have zero facts to support your assertion. At best, you suspect that's the reason we abstained. I suspect a different reason.

We only have subs, frigates and some lousy helicopters from NATO countries (and we hardly use them), the rest that we use almost everyday we made them (MRAPs, IFVs, AMVs, Medium lift helicopter, attack helicopter, OPVs, IPVs)

Luckily, the Gripen is from a neutral country.

But anyways, I'd choose to abstain as well, I wouldn't want a nuke coming my way should uncle Putin goes AWOL.

Re the above, true. SA investment in Russia is R100 billion. Russian investment in SA is R20 billion.
SA is the 5th largest investor in the rest of Africa. Russia is not even in the top 10.

Since that ruralitarian Zuma got into power in 2009, we stopped thinking of our place globally, and became what I call a spaza nation.
It's why I was pleased when SA diplomats pushed back strongly at the last Russia-Africa Summit when their Russian counterparts seemed to condescend to them about Africa trade.

SA abstaining was clear from a close reading of DIRCO's statement of 24 Feb. To wit:

"South Africa calls on Russia to immediately withdraw its forces from Ukraine in line with the United Nations Charter, which enjoins all member states to settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice are not endangered.
South Africa emphasises respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states."

"The door of diplomacy should never be closed even as conflict has broken out. We also urge all parties to approach the situation in a spirit of compromise, with all sides respecting international law. In light of the escalating conflict, we call on all parties to resume diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the concerns raised expressed by Russia."
From the 2 paragraphs above, you can see what SA expects of Russia, and what it expects of the US, EU and Ukraine.

The UN resolution excluded all elements of the 2nd paragraph, that is, serious consideration of Russia's concerns, and that's why SA abstained.

This is turning out to be the cleanest war in recent history even the Americans didn't do so well in the early stages of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The extensive use of high calibre precision weapons by the Russian Armed Armed Forces to decapitate whatever exists of the military and political levers of the Ukrainian State is evident whilst allowing the continued function of the local economy as much as possible for ordinary citizens is military genius. This is without doubt purely clean warfare.

The costs of war. The aim is to minimize as much as possible human and material losses.

Diagnosis & Prognosis

The Russian Military are playing something out of the new doctrine of General Leo Irabor's warfare strategy. Let the enemy and their sympathizers warmonger and propaganda while you make incontrovertible statements of tactical victory on the battlefield leaked to Social Media and widely disseminated by independent sources validating & giving credibility to what and when you make official defence press conferences. Clearly military commanders are adjusting to the new norm of information strategy in a world traditional media is dominated and controlled by the West. The Russian Army is surgically cutting off important Ukrainian cities to effectively bring it under its control at the negotiating table or in the field achieving its stated objectives of demilitarization and consolidating its sphere of influence without having to succumb to an insurgency. A very well thought out operation.

A young reporter once asked an editor at The Economist, "How does one write in The Economist "voice"?"
The editor replied, "Write as if you were God."
Seems that conceit is still ingrained at that British rag, which deigns to tell us about democracy when it championed an illegal war based on lies, against the wishes of the majority of Brits.

Things are about to get interesting for our Namibian cousins.

At least 3 billion barrels: TotalEnergies' Venus is Sub-Saharan Africa's biggest ever oil discovery

TotalEnergies’ enormous Venus-1 discovery offshore Namibia holds at least 3 billion barrels of recoverable oil and is Sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest ever oil find, according to a confidential report from an industry-leading consultant.

Upstream broke the news on the huge discovery last week, just a month or so after revealing exclusively that Shell had also made a big oil discovery in Namibia with its Graff-1 wildcat.

Oil is dead long term! Cities have announced a ban on fossil fuel vehicles within the next 5 yrs.

Municipalities in Europe have been on an even more accelerated push to get diesel cars, in particular, out of inner cities. Come 2024, a diesel car won’t get you around Paris or Madrid as the capitals ban all passenger vehicles running on the fuel. A few years later, all drivers of internal combustion cars will lose access in and around London, Rome and Barcelona, Spain. All told, some 24 European cities accounting for 62 million people are banning diesels over the next decade, including 13 cities that will strike off all combustion cars in a bid to stop failing emissions limits.

Volvo has already sworn to phase out internal combustion engines by 2040. Personally,I'm not impressed by electric vehicles- I tried out a pals Toyota Prius and was sooooo underwhelmed I jumped back ASAP into my ZX. Slow and climbs a modest hill like a lawnmower I only hope thye imporve the power capacity of EVs soon.
Negotations on extraction, royalties,EPAs and construction of pipelines involving all stakeholders will take minimum 5 yrs-add another 5 for the infrastructure and Nam' may be too late for the hydrocarbon era. Neighbouring UG discovered oil in 06 and it still hasn't found market-IIRC,discussions on pipeline building are yet to conclude.

Well, we do consume 700 000 barrels/day, so we'll happily help the cousins, at a neighbourly price of course. wink
