The man must have been doing such in the past colluding with criminals.. might be that they promised him a huge amount or something in return.

I remember a trip I had from Abuja to Lagos some years back with one of those popular transport companies, it was during festive season and there was fuel scarcity that period. The driver got to one notorious spot along Lagos-Ibadan expressway and stopped saying no fuel, that company didn't give him extra money bla bla bla. I laughed and I told him and his other colleague there point blank that it's either they were robbers or they had planned with robbers to rob us at the spot and they started denying. As God would have it, one of the guys selling black market came around, I called him one side and spoke our language to him and he assured me he would bring the fuel no matter what. Long story short, we all gathered cash (excluding driver and his assistant) to buy the fuel and we left the spot that night. It was later it crossed my mind that there were laptops, ipads, iphones, dollars etc. notes on that bus including human beings and worse case scenario kidnappers and ritualists on that very route.
